Wheel Bearings
2
Bearing uses Pivots Wheels Rotating shafts Oscillating shafts
Sliding shafts
3
BEARING LOAD RADIAL LOAD - When bearing load is applied in a vertical direction. THRUST LOAD - When bearing load is applied in a horizontal direction ANGULAR LOAD - When bearing load is applied in between vertical and horizontal
4
Radial Load Axial or thrust load Angular Load

BEARING TERMINOLOGY INNER RACE SEPARATOR OR CAGE ROLLING ELEMENTS
BALLS ROLLERS OUTER RACE OR CUP
8
BEARING TYPES CYLINDRICAL BALL BEARING CYLINDRICAL ROLLER BEARING
TAPERED ROLLER BEARING NEEDLE ROLLER BEARING
9
Cylindrical Ball bearings
Radial loads only.. Can be double rows of ball bearings.. Installing bearing.. Press the outer race in a housing.. Press the inner race on a shaft..
10
HEAVY LOAD
11
Can be double rows of ball bearings
For heavy thrust loads Can with stand thrust loads Can handle some axial loads
12
Some FWD use a double tapered bearing.
Designed to handle radial and thrust loads. Usually not serviceable
13
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
14
Cylindrical Roller Bearings
Designed for Radial load Can withstand some thrust load
15
Tapered roller bearings
Excellent capability to handle : Radial Loads Thrust Loads Angular Loads
16
NEEDLE ROLLER BEARING Is very compact Small steel rollers
Thin outer race Used in steering gears and alternators Rollers push against each other For Radial Loads
17
TYPICAL DISC BRAKE BEARING ASSEMBLY
18
Bearing Diagnosis Normal bearing life Bearing failure
19
BEARING FAILURES BENT CAGE ETCHING BRINELLING ABRASIVE ROLLER WATER
GALLING MUST REPLACE RACE AND BEARING AS A SET!!! SERVICE AND SYSTEMS LAB MANUAL PAGE 284, FIG 9-54
20
BEARING SERVICE Should use brass drift punch (286L)
Should use bearing driver whenever possible (286C & 291L) Clean bearing and race Pack new grease in bearing (289C) Use high temp grease on disc brake equipped car. (265L)

Springless seal
23
Double lip seal
24
Spring loaded Seal
25
Seal Replacement Different brands look different What is important is:
Match the OD Match the ID Some brands have a steel lip and some do not. (Caution) The steel housing is very thin on some
26
Remember Not only does the seal need to look good now............
It need to be good enough for the next several thousand miles. Buying new seals are a cheap insurance
