Protecting Worker Health What is Industrial Hygiene? American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Students and Early Career Professionals Committee
2
Protecting Worker Health Who are industrial hygienists? Industrial hygienists wear many different “hats” in their day-to-day jobs He or she could be a: – Scientist – Investigator – Trainer/Educator – and more!
3
Protecting Worker Health What do industrial hygienists do? Industrial hygienists figure out the safest way for people to do their jobs and live their lives. They do this by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling hazards in people’s lives. What does this mean to you?

Protecting Worker Health
5
Meet “Herbert the Hamster” Herbert lives in a cage. The cage is in a classroom where the students are in charge of caring for him.
6
Protecting Worker Health Helping “Herbert the Hamster” Herbert needs a healthy place to live. – What does Herbert need to be healthy (identify)? – How can we tell if Herbert is healthy (measure)? – How can we make Herbert’s home healthier (fix)?
7
Protecting Worker Health Anticipation (“Pre-Identify”) Like all living things, Herbert needs clean food, water and a healthy place to live so he can continue to grow strong. Can you “pre-identify” things that Herbert may need? food water shelter
8
Protecting Worker Health Recognition (“Identify”) Like all living things, Herbert also produces waste and may live with other creatures. Can you identify potential problems that may change Herbert’s healthy home? waste overcrowding
9
Protecting Worker Health Evaluation (“Measure”) How can we “measure” if Herbert is happy? – Amount of waste in cage? – Number of animals in cage? – Strength of odor in cage? – Amount of clean food and water in cage? – Herbert’s general appearance? What tools/equipment would you use to measure these?
10
Protecting Worker Health Control (“Fix”) How can we “fix” Herbert’s home? – Reduce waste in cage. – Limit number of animals in cage. – Clean and air out cage. – Provide right amount of clean food and water. – Make sure Herbert is healthy and disease-free. What would be the “right” amount of “fix”?
11
Protecting Worker Health Meet “Herbert’s Friends” They take care of Herbert but they also need healthy places to live and work. How would you help them?

Protecting Worker Health Perform Exercise Ideas for showing IH measuring tools – Use Indoor Air Quality monitors – Use Colorimetric tubes & Bellows pumps – Etc.
14
Protecting Worker Health How would you like to help us keep people safe and healthy? As industrial hygienists, you’ll And Because
