ICT in Prefabrication & Precast Housing An SE CAD Case Study 7 th Industrialized Building System (IBS) Roundtable Workshop LIEW YONG SEONG B.Eng. (Hons.), M.Eng., MIES, MSSSS Advance Contech (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.

Outline  What is SE CAD?  It’s been a long way – the SE CAD story  To maximize repetition through standardization & serialization  What’s ahead?

 SE CAD is one of the key enablers for precast/prefabricated housing projects like these…

Pinnacle @ Duxton 55-storey interlinked towers with prefabricated reinforcements and precast structural and façade components

Precast planks : worth to be considered for site works efficiency

Reference projects are just a stone throw away

On going projects Queenstown New development

More than 80% of Singapore population live in HDB flats, and most of them are precast. The HDB structural system is prebuilt in SE CAD precast component database.

It’s been a long way

streamline construction processes to meet the challenges ahead with the use of advanced technologies

In-situ RC construction  Dependent of foreign labours  Slow and weather dependent  Wastages of materials  Difficult quality control  Environmental issue  Non-systematic and non-standardized >> Solution : prefabrication/precast technology

Use of conventional software and structural system hinder the use of prefab and precast technology  No standardization  Erroneous  Difficult to check and archive information

Conventional RC design and detailing Conventional RC design and detailing The designers and checkers night mare!  Hundreds of drawing to be drawn, checked and archived

Criteria  For Residential structure  Does NOT rely on proprietary system / components  Centralize database: Eg. Joint details ○ Centre reference for tested joint details for beam-wall, beam- column, etc. Built in proven and tested precast components database of beam, column etc  Serialize name of structural members for easy reference, order placing, production and site control, which is also third-party database friendly  Extendabie – energy saving study, virsualization etc  Super user friendly – for average user to be productive and expert in doing precast/prefab design.

centralized, reusable knowledge-base and an advanced engineering IT solution that streamlines construction processes! Goal : A TOTAL Prefab/Precast Solution for Housing!

Prefab Structural System Development

HDB Prefab Structural System

To maximize repetition through standardization & serialization Structural Steel  Better standardization  Steel Database  Universal Naming Convention  Efficient Reference, Design, Checking, and Logistics

BEAM CAGE CODE J/U/P 2 3 6 1V Cage series Width of Beam Depth of Beam Ref. No. or Ref. No. with alphabet indicating type of stirrups Ref. No. indicating type of main reinf. Suffix

CAGE SERIES  J Series - Light cage where cage reinforcement are used only for beams with clear span >1.5m. - J Series is fully shop fabricated with main bars.  U Series - Standard cage where cage reinforcement are generally used for uniformly distributed loading condition. - Also applicable to light point load condition as specified in the details.  P Series - Standard cage where cage reinforcement are generally used for point load condition. - Also applicable to uniformly distrbuted loading condition as specified in the details.

SUFFIXES  S – For one span beam (Discontinuous at both ends), or for beam with depth difference from adjacent beams. Eg. J3612S / U3612S / P3612S  V – For tapered beam and for U & P Series only. Eg. U3621V / P3621V (300X600 – 900)  T – For 1 st storey beam tying column / wall (column / wall at one end or both ends). Eg. U3621T / P3612T  B – For beam with non-standard width. Eg. J3612B / U3612B / P3612B  D – For beam with non-standard depth. Eg. J3612D / U3612D / P3612D  H – For beam using H bar stirrup cage. Eg. U4649H

BEAM CAGE – J SERIES J SERIES – Main Reinforcement & Stirrup

BEAM CAGE – U SERIES (1 or 2 layers bottom reinforcement) ( 3 layers bottom reinforcement) U SERIES – Main Reinforcement & Stirrup

BEAM CAGE – P SERIES P SERIES – Main Reinforcement & Stirrup (1 or 2 layers bottom reinforcement) ( 3 layers bottom reinforcement)

BEAM CAGE – “0” CAGE for U & P Series (ONLY STIRRUP CAGE) (Main reinforcement are shown in connection details)

BEAM CAGE – T13 BAR MARKED h FOR U OR P SERIES INCLUDNG “0” CAGE TYPICAL U OR P SERIES CAGE

BEAM LAYOUT PLAN

A handy tool for design engineers Efficient knowledge transfer Know prefab, use prefab, love prefab!
