Florida Standards Assessment Essentials DIVISION OF ACADEMICS DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS “GIVING OUR STUDENTS THE WORLD” MIDDLE GRADES MATHEMATICS

Tonight’s Goals: –Explain the new Common Core Standards. –Answer questions about the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) –Share sample math questions and activities –Share information about how teachers, parents, and students can support learning. Welcome Parents!

Florida, along with 45 other states, now have common learning standards for grades K - 12. Common Core State Standards place emphasis on critical thinking and analysis. Rigorous learning goals and expectations

What are technology- enhanced items?

Technology-enhanced Technology-enhanced items are computer-delivered items that require students to interact with test content to select, construct, and/or support their answers.

What types of enhanced- technology items are there?

Equation Editor May Vary

Can we use calculators? NO – Grade 6 YES – Grades 7 th, 8 th, Algebra I, & Geometry

What is on the reference sheet?

Reference Sheet The reference sheet is one-sided. Reference sheets will be available as online references (in a pop-up window). Formulas given are dependent on grade level or EOC exam. Conversions within systems of measures are given.

Sample Problem

Select All That Apply Walter is buying a new chess set. The original price of the set is $35, and Walter has a coupon for 12% off the original price. Walter wants to know the price after he uses the coupon. Select the equations Walter can use, and determine the final price of the chess set. Select all that apply. Walter has to pay $ for the chess set after using the coupon.

Grade 7 SOLUTION

Original price $35 $35 Original percent 100% 100% Price after the coupon x dollars x dollars Percent paid after the coupon88% There are four quantities in this solution

x is 88% of the original price, and $35 is 100% of the original price. These ratios are equal to each other, so we can write the equation below.

We can also say that the ratio of x to $35 is equal to the ratio of 88% to 100%.

This equation is not true.

To find the price with the coupon, we need to solve one of the correct equations for x. Let's pick one of the equations. We can solve this for x by multiplying both sides by 88%.
