Definitions Sight words-words that are recognized by sight. New Words- Students have a concept related to the word.

Definitions New Concept- Little to no background knowledge. They don’t recognize the word either. New Meaning- Students know the word. They are unfamiliar with the way it is used.

Word Identification Sight Words High Frequency Words- words that are so common in reading material and are essential that children learn to identify them without sounding them out.

Decoding Phonics-Students use knowledge of sounds to decode the word. Analogies- Students use knowledge of rhyming words to deduce the pronunciation of an unusual word Context clues- Students use semantic and syntatic info to predict unfamiliar words. Morphemic Knowledge - Apply knowledge to the root of the word.

Decoding Syllabic Analysis- Breakdown multi- syllabic words into syllables and then use phonics to identify the word
