1 Grammar Review 1. The Noun 1. Common Noun – A common noun is the person, place, thing or idea in the sentence. ex. teacher (common noun) 2. Proper Noun – A SPECIFIC person, place, thing, or idea that gets a CAPITAL LETTER at the beginning. ex. Mrs. Gallardo

2 Grammar Review 3. Concrete Noun – A noun that you Can touch or see. ex. classroom, ball 4. Abstract Noun – A noun that you Cannot use any of your 5 senses on – it is more of an idea, thought, or feeling. Ex. love, happiness, hunger 5. Compound Noun – 2 words making up 1 NEW person, place, thing or idea.Ex. high heel, playground, fund-raiser

3 Verbs 2. Verb - A verb expresses the action (just DO it) or condition (it just IS) of a person, place or thing (the noun in the sentence.) Action – Ms. Gallardo threw the ball. She also kicked it across the room. Condition – Ms. Gallardo was kind and respectful. I am nice, too. More common condition verbs – be, was, am is, seems, become, appear

4 Action Verbs – 2 types Visible – you can SEE it done – kick, follow, run, write, stir, tap, swim Mental – in one’s head – you cannot see it - wonder, forget, annoy, pretend, consider

5 Grammar Review 3. Pronoun – Takes the place of a noun AFTER the noun has been introduced. Most common pronouns: I, he, she, we, it, him, her, and they Ex. Alex had a red shirt on today. I am certain he will come home with an ice cream stain on it. “I” when referring to yourself, ALWAYS gets a capital letter, no matter where you place it in a sentence – front, middle or end.

6 4. Adjectives Adjectives – They describe (modify) nouns and pronouns. They tell the answer to these questions: –1) What kind? –2) What color? –3) Which one? –4) How many? Goal? To create a great mental picture with your words. Can I picture what you are writing?

8 5. Adverbs Adverbs – a word that modifies (describes) a verb, an adjective, or another adverb and it tells when, where, or how. They often end in “ly.” Nowtodaytomorrow Soon laterimmediately Quickly quietly calmlyoften Before earlyfinally loudly

9 8 Parts of Speech 1. Noun – A person, place or thing. 2. Pronoun – Takes the place of a noun AFTER the noun has been introduced. 3. Adjective – Describes the noun or pronoun – what kind? Which one? How many? What color? 4. Adverb – Describes verbs, adverbs and adjectives – How? When? Where? They often end in the suffix “ly.”

10 8 Parts of Speech 5. Verb- What you do or what it be… 6. Conjunctions – Connects words / phrases in the sentence… and, or, but… 7. Interjections – Expresses strong feelings…Hooray! Whoa! Ouch! Yahoo! 8. Prepositions – Begins phrases that show relationships…under, above, on, around…(things you can “do” with a hill)
