The primary consideration is to have a neatly groomed appearance while wearing naval uniforms.

Assigned with the USMCs -if you elect to wear and are issued the Marine service uniforms at no expense, you must abide by grooming standards established for Marines.

Articles: no articles shall protrude from or be visible on the uniform: -cell phones, pencils, pens, watch chains, KEY CHAIN fobs, large wallets, etc.

Articles: Bags shall be hand carried except: Backpacks/gym bags worn when riding a bicycle or motorcycle Women’s Navy certified handbags (over left shoulder) Full Sea bag on both shoulders or left hand

Hair for men: -neat, clean and well groomed -above ears and around neck; tapered…. -on the neck; not touch the collar -bulk of hair not to exceed 2”

Hair for women: -not outrageously multicolored or faddish… -color must look natural and complementary -ponytails, pigtails, widely spaced individual hanging locks, & braids which protrude from the head are not authorized….

Hair for women: -hairstyle of multiple braids is worn: shall be of uniform dimension, approx. ¼”, and tightly interwoven. -no foreign objects braided into the hair -corn rows (fore and aft) are OK but shall not protrude from the head

Hair for women: -in uniform, the hair may touch, but not fall below a horizontal line level with the lower edge of the back collar. -Jumper uniforms; may extend a maximum of 1-1/2” below the top of jumper collar.

Shaving & Mustaches: -no portion of the mustache shall extend below the lip line of the upper lip…. -length of individual hair shall not exceed approx. ½”… -no shave chits; facial hair shall not exceed ¼”….

Hairpieces: wigs or hairpieces shall be of good “quality” and fit, present a natural appearance and conform to grooming standards.

Hairpieces for men: wigs or hairpieces may be worn to for cosmetic reasons to cover natural baldness or physical disfigurement.

Hairpieces for women: wigs or hairpieces meeting women’s grooming standards are authorized in uniform.

Cosmetics for women (ONLY): -Colors blend with natural skin tone. -lipstick colors; conservative and complement individual -long false eyelashes; not in uniform!!!!

Jewelry – earrings for men: not authorized in uniform, civvies on base, civvies at military functions, some foreign countries

Jewelry – earrings for women: -One per ear in uniform -4mm – 6mm ball -gold for the E7 & above and silver for the E6 & below

Wear can be suspended for: -improper wear -brings discredit upon the Navy -fail to maintain uniforms or sea bag requirements

Casual (picnics, athletic events, daytime stuff): -tank-tops, white “undershirts” worn as outer garments, cut-off shorts and shower sandals
