Started as apprentices, then journeymen to become skilled craftsmen Got wood from nearby trees Used a drawknife to pull towards and shave off any small portions of wood Used the lathe to carve into desired shapes Used a hammer to put it all together

Used sand or steel wool to shave portion of wood to make saw dust that made the cabinets smoother Used a plane to put a very specific angle and to make the wood smooth Used a glue that became very hard to put all the pieces together Put a finish on fancy pieces

Furniture was produced all over Virginia Colony. They mostly used oak. They also used maple, ash, walnut, and mahogany. The simple chair might have required 30 to 35 hours.
