Goal The goal of the experiment is to insulate a soda can filled with hot water when it is placed in ice water. The insulator can be no larger than 10in x 10in x 20in.
3
Hypothesis If we find which materials will retain heat and make the best insulator, then an insulator made of styrofoam, newspaper, and cotton balls will work the best.
4
Materials (Insulator) -Styrofoam -Newspaper -Cotton balls -Hot glue
5
Materials (Creating) Hacksaw Sandpaper (Optional) Boxcutter (Again) Hot glue gun
6
Why These Materials? Styrofoam- it has hundreds of gas bubbles trapped in it so that blocks heat. Newspaper- It also has air trapped inside the fibers. Air is a poor conductor. Hot glue- It had the ability to fill all the cracks. Sandpaper- To shave down the styrofoam to a more precise size. (If its not on here its probably self explanatory)
7
Step 1 Cut styrofoam to size of 10cm x 10cm x 20 cm or less. Remember to make the lid and bottom to fit inside the walls. Sand the edges with sandpaper to make it easier to glue later.
8
Step 2 Sand the middle of each wall in a curved form to make a spot for the can. Glue newspaper to the curve of each wall.
9
Step 3 Put the walls together but don't glue. Place the can inside to check if there is room.
10
Step 4 Glue all the pieces together. Do not glue the lid on. Seal the cracks in between with a lot of hot glue so no air can escape.

Conclusion In conclusion our insulator was successful, but not as successful as it could've been. If we spent more time sealing it and cutting down everything very precisely our insulator would have worked better.
