What is a simile? “Sim”: prefix – think of other words that use this prefix Similar: (adj.) Having a resemblance in appearance, character, or quantity, without being identical. Simulation: (n.) the imitative representation of the functioning of one system or process by means of the functioning of another <a computer simulation of an industrial process D EFINITION : ( N.) A FIGURE OF SPEECH involving a comparison between two unlike entities using “like” or “as”. D EFINITION : ( N.) A FIGURE OF SPEECH

Simile Examples We’re stuck like glue. He’s as free as a rolling stone. I’m feeling so fly, like a G6. Her skin was as white as snow.

What is a metaphor? The prefix, “meta-”, means “situated behind or beyond” Metacognition: (n.) thinking about thinking Metaphysical: (adj.) of or relating to the transcendent or to a reality beyond what is perceptible to the senses A more abstract term than simile, this kind of comparison is often more complicated. D EFINTION : ( N.) A FIGURE OF SPEECH in which a word or phrase denoting one kind of object or action is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them. D EFINTION : ( N.) A FIGURE OF SPEECH A metaphor is an implied comparison (as in “a marble brow”), in contrast to the explicit comparison of the SIMILE (“a brow white as marble”). SIMILE

Metaphor Examples “My heart’s a stereo.” “You ain’t nothing but a hound dog.” “She’s a night owl; I’m an early bird.” “Middle School is a jungle.”

When finding metaphors, ask yourself… does he or she LITERALLY mean that… It’s raining men? She feels blue? The world’s a stage? He is a sheep? The man is a pig?

Let’s “FIGURE” these out! About her life on the farm: “I was nothing more than a cow on two legs” (72). About Brian being very brutally honest: “It’s like when someone breaks it to you that there’s no such thing as Santa” (74). About being really busy, then falling asleep: “That’s what it felt like. Like I was a plank that someone let go of and I just fell smack into this dark warm place where I didn’t think or move all night, and that was just about the best thing ever” (80).
