1 Sedimentary Rocks Cornell Notes pg. 133

2 How do Sedimentary Rocks form?
Small rocks, sand, and other sediment are deposited in thick layers. Over time, sediment is compacted and cemented together to form rock.

3 Where does the sediment come from?
Other rocks that are weathered (broken down) Can be from igneous, metamorphic, or even other sedimentary rocks!

4 What is compaction? cementation?
Small rocks and sand are compressed (pressed together) Minerals dissolved in water act as a glue to bind sediment together.

5 What is strata? Most noticeable feature of sedimentary rocks- rocks layers!

6 What is Clastic Sedimentary Rock?
Fragments of rock and sand are cemented together with dissolved minerals. Can be coarse or fine grained. What is Clastic Sedimentary Rock?

7 What is Chemical Sedimentary Rock?
Rainwater dissolves minerals from rocks Minerals eventually crystallize to form chemical sedimentary rocks. Halite: rock salt

8 What is Organic Sedimentary Rock?
Forms from remains of plants and animals. Coal: ancient swamps Limestone: hard shells of living things
