ROCKS Read each slide. Look at each picture. Answer each question.
3
There are three kinds of rocks: METAMORPHIC IGNEOUS and SEDIMENTARY. 1 - 2 - 3
4
Metamorphic rocks are squished and folded.
5
Metamorphic means to change form. Metamorphic rocks change because of heat and pressure.
6
Any type of rock can become a metamorphic rock. When rocks are buried deep in the Earth there is lots of heat and pressure. The heat and pressure make the rock change form.
7
The word METAMORPHIC means “to change form.”
8
If there is too much heat the rock will melt and become molten magma.
9
Igneous rocks are formed when hot molten magma or lava cools and becomes a solid. The word IGNEOUS means “fire.”
10
Volcanic rocks are igneous rocks that formed when lava erupted from a volcano.
11
Sedimentary rocks are made by the slow hardening of tiny bits of rock, or sediment, into layers.
12
Sedimentary rocks are in stripes or layers.
13
The Grand Canyon is sedimentary rock.
14
The chalk you use on the chalkboard is made of sedimentary rock.
15
Rocks are always changing. This is called the rock cycle.
17
The Rock Cycle Tiny bits of sediment drift into the sea. Layers are formed and harden into SEDIMENTARY ROCK.
18
Pressure and heat build up and push the rocks together making the rocks change form and change their name to METAMORPHIC ROCK.
19
When sedimentary rock or metamorphic rock get too hot they melt and make IGNEOUS ROCK.
20
Answer each question in your Science Journal. 1.Name the three types of rocks. _________, ________, _________ 2.What does METAMORPHIC mean? ______________________ 3.What is another word for FIRE? 4.Which rock has stripes or layers?
