4 Opportunities Farming - Livestock farming – sheep and beef with some dairy in the lower dales. Quarrying – provides employment for 7% of the population. Contributes £6 million per year to the local economy. Gritstone – motorways and runways. Limestone – agricultural and industrial lime, glass making and toothpaste.

5 Opportunities Recreation and leisure – 10 million people live within 90 mins driving time. Wide spread of activities across the park. Walking, climbing, caving, canoeing, exploring the villages, bird watching, gorge walking.

6 Changes to the farming landscape in the Dales. Set Aside Farmers are paid not to plant crops on up to 20% of their land. Voluntary scheme The aim is to reduce surplus.

7 Advantages Farmers can access additional money for doing nothing with their land. UK farmers have a choice between moving their set aside area around the farm each year or setting the same piece of land aside for a number of years. 9 Impact in the Dales Some land given over for grouse shooting and farm woodlands. Farmhouse accommodation, campsites and farm shops. Countryside Stewardship Schemes (CSS) pays grants to farmers who manage their land in a traditional way.
