Changes to the farming landscape in the Dales. Set Aside Farmers are paid not to plant crops on up to 20% of their land. Voluntary scheme The aim is to reduce surplus.
7
Advantages Farmers can access additional money for doing nothing with their land. UK farmers have a choice between moving their set aside area around the farm each year or setting the same piece of land aside for a number of years. This gives them more flexibility as they plan their future cropping Additional money can be made from alternative non farming activities. Quad Biking. Camp sites.

Disadvantages Imposes restrictions on types of crops grown, some of which may be more profitable. Loss of traditional farming landscape and practices. Farmers must manage their set aside land so that it could be brought back into agricultural production if necessary
