3 Sinkhole Formation At one time Florida was covered by a shallow ocean. Limestone was formed and the ocean receded.

4 Sinkhole Formation In the atmosphere and in the soil, rainwater combines with carbon dioxide to form carbonic acid. Cracks in limestone allow acidic water to enter where it dissolves the limestone and caves are formed.
