The War The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk allowed Germany to pull troops from the Eastern Front and move them to the Western Front. This was Germany’s chance to push through to Paris. The French and British waited for American troops to arrive. By the time German troops reached the Marne for the second time, American troops were arriving by the thousands daily.

The situation worsens for the Central Powers Despite having more troops on the Western Front than ever, the Germans continued to lose. Additionally Bulgaria had surrendered to the Allies quickly followed by the Ottoman Turks. A few months later, Austria-Hungary fell apart and formed their own separate governments.

Fourteen Points As Germany’s defeat seems more and more certain, President Woodrow Wilson stood before Congress and delivered his Fourteen Points speech. He declared that World War I was being fought for a moral cause and called for postwar peace in Europe. The speech actually only has 10 points, but it would prove to be an influential document. Would become the basis for the terms of the German surrender, as negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919.
