PROGRAM PROFILE & BACKGROUND CHALLENGE BASED LEARNING PROGRAM @ TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY Tsinghua is transforming its teaching Initiated in 2008, from a graduate survey, emphasizing interdiscipline Specific funding support from 2014 Aim: to arouse student’s curiosity and imagination, strengthen their courage and confidence facing challenge, promote their ability of knowledge access and integration, and establish the spirit of communication, cooperation and innovation. Challenge Based Learning For Chemical Engineering A good pattern for Chemical Engineering Education Connection with multiple disciplines, such as Bio, Material, Info…
4
PROGRAM PROFILE & BACKGROUND AUDIENCE Exploring and understanding mass transport in bioprocess from a view point of chemical engineering Process development and enhancement FOCUSING Advanced undergraduates /Graduates interested in drug delivery and bioprocess (10-20) Multiple disciplines (Chem. Eng., Bioeng., Pharm., etc) MASS TRANSPORT IN BIOPROCESS Mass transport is an elementary process for life An important research problem for drug delivery, nutrition, microbial cell factories, etc. The understanding of mass transport in bio-process, also helps to develop novel and high performance mass transport process in chemical engineering
5
PROJECT/PROBLEM-BASED Challenge projects/problems come from research front Open-ended, Unknown, Multiple possible solutions Interdisciplinary research/problems Drug delivery-Targeted delivery of chemicals to tumor cells Chemical Engineering – Multiphase mass transport enhancement Microbial cell factories – Fast release of the products and relieve the products restrain Students defined projects/problems ? Interdisciplinary background students (~3) team work Online collaborating and sharing 8 lectures (Knowledge, problem, methods /toolbox) At lest 3 circles of discussion with teacher/TA 2 presentations (Background, Plan) and final defense Experiments if feasible Project Topics Key Point
6
STUDENT-CENTERED Team work with teacher/TA Problem & Goals definition (?) Task assignment Knowledge learning by themselves Solutions proposal Presentation Self & mutual evaluation Student Teacher Other Supporting Literature Discussing rooms & toolbox Lab for part experiments Expert’s advice from concerned professors or industrial engineers Define & Structure the problem/issue Facilitate and guide the process Ongoing feedback Ensure the students have learned the required content evaluates Evaluate Structure of the curriculum ?
7
OUTCOMES Based on a-k of ABET How to evaluate the learning outcome quantitatively How to keep a continuous improvement An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning General Specific Define /model the mass transport problems in bioprocess Explore mass transport problem from a view point of chemical engineering Propose solutions to enhance/control the mass transport in bioprocess Develop novel and high performance mass transport process Based on Tsinghua’s goal An ability of knowledge integration Increased curiosity and imagination Cooperation and innovation
