2. Figurative Language Connotation: a meaning that is implied by a word apart from the thing which it describes explicitly. Denotation: literal or dictionary meanings of a word Metaphor: figure of speech which makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things or objects which are unalike but have some common characteristics.

3. Figurative Language Simile: a figure of speech that makes a comparison, showing similarities between two different things with the help of the words “like” or “as”. Symbolism: the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them representative meanings that are different from their literal sense.

4. Vocabulary Admire: To consider or think of with respect or warm approval Shunned: Avoided or stayed away from deliberately Harness: to control or restrain Expose: uncovered or unprotected Praise: To express warm approval or admiration

5. Vocabulary Abyss: A seemingly bottomless pit. Sway: Move or to cause to move slowly or rhythmically backward or forward or from side to side Eternal: Lasting or existing forever; without end or beginning Guarded: Cautious and having possible reservations Clusters: A group of similar things
