Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s Shaheedi Let’s recap Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s Shaheedi The news of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s Shaheedi spread like wild fire, so all the Sikhs now became afraid for their own safety. They worried that the Emperor would now come to kill all the Sikhs. Can you think of some of the things that led up to Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s Shaheedi?

The attribute of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee Justice

Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee was the only child of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee. From a young age Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee insisted his son be educated in the sciences, sports, sword fighting, wrestling and religion. Does anyone know how tall Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee was? Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee grew up to be 6ft 5 inches tall Let’s just see how tall 6ft 5inches really is!

Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee becoming the next Guru.... 3 days before Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s Shaheedi, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee at the age of 11 was proclaimed the 6 th Guru of the Sikhs. Even though Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee was young, he was still very wise and knew that his Sikhs were afraid and that he had to ensure that his Sikhs felt safe.

Guru Jee wore 2 Kirpans – Miri & Piri Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee began wearing 2 Kirpans. Each represented a very important quality all Sikhs should have. Does anyone know what Miri and Piri represent? Piri = Spiritual That a Sikh should build a personal relationship with their Guru. It’s a very internal quality. Miri = Temporal That a Sikh should apply their spiritual practice to help others and stand up against injustice. It’s an external quality.

The Warrior Guru From then on, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee always maintained an army of Sikhs who were always ready to protect the innocent incase any Tyrants like Jahangir ever tried to attack the Sikhs again. It’s no different than Britain having the British Army to protect Britain!

While Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee was travelling across North india, he met a local Saint called Samrath Ramdaas. Samrath Ramdaas saw Guru Jee dressed like a warrior, with weapons and riding a horse with his Army and asked Guru Jee, “I hear you are the Sixth Guru of the Sikhs and you sit on Guru Nanak’s throne. But how can you dress like a warrior and still call yourself a Guru?” Guru Jee replied “Internally I live the life of a Saint but externally I live the life of a warrior. I dress like a warrior to protect Saints like you from Tyrants who try to harm God’s Saints…like you” Samrath Ramdaas was so touched by Guru Jee’s reply that he fell at Guru Jee’s feet and he himself became a Sikh of Guru Jee. Guru Jee meets a Hindu Saint

How do people protect their most valued possessions? What’s your most important possessions- things that you just can’t live without? What do you do to try to protect them from being lost or stolen?

Being an activist Does anyone remember what this image means? scu suxwiesI sc kI bylw ] Speak the Truth, at the right time The introduction of Miri (Temporal) quality by Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib taught us to always stand up for the Truth. This can be done by writing a letter, doing a protest, making a video, drawing or painting or even through self defence. But a Sikh of the Guru should always stands up for what is right. This is why Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee were made shaheed. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee proclaimed that now all Sikhs must follow in the footsteps of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee and stand up for the Truth.

Sikhs are born Activists who try to make this world a better place!

Why do we need both Miri & Piri Why do we need both Miri & Piri together? To ensure that Sikhs can defend themselves if ever attacked. To ensure that Sikhs always remember that they must always stand up for the Truth. To ensure Sikhs realise that it’s not good enough just to be a religious person who prays, but you have to go out there and help humanity too. To instill a sense of pride within Sikhs after Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee’s Shaheedi. To always remind Sikhs that they have the power to make a difference in the world.

Where else do we see the concept of Miri Piri? Within the Sri Darbaar Sahib complex in Amritsar, just near Sri Harmandir Sahib, there are 2 Nishan Sahibs. One Nishan Sahib represents Miri (temporal) and the other Piri (Saintly) What are these 2 flags called? Can you remember all the 9 elements of the Nishan Sahib? The Piri Nishan Sahib is higher than the Miri Nishan Sahib. Write a paragraph explaining why you think this is the case.

Make a Miri and a Piri Nishan Sahib Your task is to draw/create a Miri and a Piri Nishan Sahib. You will be handed a sheet which has 2 Thara Sahibs already drawn for you. You have to complete the rest. Be as creative as you can! Remember one Nishan Sahib should be higher than the other

4 parts of the Khanda (Sikh Emblem) Miri = Temporal Piri = Spiritual Chakkar = God has no beginning or end Khanda = There is only One God All 4 parts of the Khanda are weapons but each of these weapons has a great teaching for Sikhs to implement in their lives. Draw a Khanda in the middle of one of your pages and write out the 4 elements of the Khanda

Homework Try to find out as many fact as you can about why Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee created the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib? Why is Sri Akal Takhat Sahib still of great importance to Sikhs even today? Who is the current Jathedar Sahib of the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib? What does the current Jathedar Sahib do?
