5. “A LARGE AND CROWDED TOWN” Smolensk is a great cultural centre, one of the ancient and most beautiful cities of Russia. The 1 st mention of Smolensk dates back from 863. The town was a centre of a Slavic tribe of Krivichey and stood on the important trade way “from the Varangians to the Greeks”. Smolensk was called “the shield of Russia”, “the key- town”, “the warrior-town" thanks to its geographical position.

6. “THE NECKLACE OF RUSSIA” The Fortress Wall, a unique architectural and defensive construction, including 38 towers and 6,5 km long, was created by Fyodor Kon in 1596- 1602. Now it is only 3 km long and has 17 towers. The monument to Fyodor Kon was erected by the famous sculptor O. Komov in1991.

7. THE ASSUMPTION CATHEDRAL The Assumption Cathedral was built in 1772 replacing the Old Cathedral of Holy Mother’s Assumption which was built by the order of Prince Vladimir Monomakh in 1101. It was blown up by the last defenders of Smolensk against Polish troops in 1609. The icon of the Holy Mother of Smolensk – Hodigitria is a copy from a miracle-making icon painted by apostle Luka.

8. MONUMENTS The monument with Eagles was created by S. Nadolsky and N. Shutsman in1913. It was dedicated to the heroes of 1812. The monument to A.Tvardovsky and his literary hero V.Tyorkin was erected by A. Sergeev in1995 to honour the poet.

9. MONUMENTS The monument to M.I. Glinka was erected by Professor A. Bokh, designed by Academician I. Bogomolov in 1885. M.I. Glinka is considered to be the founder of the Russian classical music.

10. THE ART GALLERY The Art Gallery, built in 1905 and donated to the town in 1911 by Princess M. Tenisheva, contains pictures, coins, imbroidary and lace. Princess Maria Klavdievna Tenisheva, the patroness of the arts, was a talented singer, musician, painter.

The signs of the great past You can see everywhere In monuments, parks, In cathedrals and squares. My city is ancient, It’s not out fashion. My city is young, My city is splendid.
