Introduction First Non- Propeller Design Five groups: Hull, Flexible Hull, Control, Propulsion, Safety 5 th time competing in the International Submarine Races Diverse materials are being used to create the back third of our submarine Sussex County Technical School Engineering Program 17 Students

Mission Statement Our objective in Umptysquatch - 5: is to design and fabricate an oscillatory hydrofoil propulsion system with a hydrodynamic hull based on the motion and the structure of the Thunnus Thynnus (aka Bluefin Tuna). We also wish to achieve a minimum speed of 4.20 knots and complete a minimum 1/3 of all runs attempted.

Hull The back third of the hull is flexible. The other two- thirds are rigid. Cross-sectional data from the Bluefin Tuna was used to make the shape of our hull. Rapid prototyping was used for visual design. The hull is designed to be buoyant to counterbalance the interior systems

Flexible Hull Rigid circular ribs were used for: Stability Shape Neoprene was used its superior qualities. The back third of the submarine is flexible

The ergonomic design of the propulsion system allows for synced motion Both arms and legs are used for propulsion The design utilizes linear and rotational motion The drive chain actuates the rear flex lever, rotating it making the tail oscillate back and forth. Propulsion

Front Propulsion

Rear Propulsion

Fiberglass rods connect rear propulsion to tail adapter Adapter attaches tail brackets for desired cant angle Tail fin is based of a hydrofoil of the Bluefin Tuna. Tail

Manipulation of depth control fins Actuated through joystick linkage Spring loaded at neutral position Control

Stationary and depth control fins Larger fins designed from humpback whale tubercles Casted from fiberglass micro bubbles Control Surfaces

Windows do not allow for an adequate line of vision To provide an optimal view we installed camera equipment GoPro wide angle camera sends live feed to the pilot’s water proof monitor Video/Windows

Seat

Safety Integrated to work along with the seat Spring loaded seat pushes forward Upon release of string, the buoy floats to surface

Training Online course Confined water dives: Elite Divers in Rockaway, N.J. Open water dives in Dutch Springs 8 PADI certified divers

Testing There was no field testing this year.
