Main points of the lesson Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi were contemporaries who worked in Judah after the return of the children of Israel for Babylonian captivity. God offered encouragement and instruction for the rebuilding of the temple through Haggai and Zechariah Prophecies of Christ are found in the books of Zechariah and Malachi

Haggai the prophet The name Haggai means “festal” indicating he may have been born on a major feast day. The prophesy was written on the first day of Elul (Aug-Sept) 520BC and delivered on the twenty-first day of Tishri (Sept-Oct) 520 BC Haggai wrote to encourage the exiles to again continue work on rebuilding the temple. The work had stopped for sixteen years.

Over fifty thousand Jews had returned to Jerusalem from captivity. Main points found in Haggai A word of reproof A word of support A word of blessing A word of promise Lessons found in Haggai God will bless His people if they follow Him. We should never weary of doing the work of God We can depend on God’s promises.

The prophet Zechariah Zechariah means “Lord has remembered” His was a contemporary of Haggai The prophesy may have been written in two parts and at two different times Chapters 1-8: BC Chapters 9-14: 480 BC Zechariah often used the phrases “Lord of hosts” (chapters 2:10 & 9:15) “Word of the Lord” (chapters 1:7 & 9:1) “Saith the Lord” (chapters 1:7 and 12:1)

Like Haggai, Zechariah was written to remnant, returned from Babylon, who were discouraged with the small size of the Temple as compared to Solomon’s temple. Zechariah’s intent was to encourage the remnant to believe that God was at work restoring Israel and to prepare them for the coming Messiah.

The prophet Malachi He prophesied one hundred years after Haggai and Zechariah began to write Lived in a day of moral an social decline Malachi means “my messenger” The prophesy was written between BC which was after the completion of the new temple in Jerusalem (416) The book was written to the remnant a few generations after the Temple was built.
