What we are proposing

Why are we proposing to make these changes? The proposed changes are made in accordance with the Department of Sustainability and Environment’s Guidelines for Geographic Names 2010. The guidelines and direction from Officers within the Department indicate a threshold population for suburbs between 8,000 to 25,000. Limiting the size of a suburb’s population also assists emergency services response. Council has a duty of care to ensure that all properties are able to be easily identified to emergency services. Australia Post will also be incorporating a new Post Code of 3217 over this area in partnership with Council’s proposed changes.

Grovedale to Mount Duneed The northern boundary to be aligned with the Geelong-Warnambool Railway line. The eastern boundary to be aligned with Surf Coast Highway. The southern and western boundaries to remain as currently aligned. A new post code of 3217 will also be implemented by Australia Post.

Mount Duneed

Mount Duneed & Connewarre to Armstrong Creek (proposed) The western boundary will be Surf Coast Highway. The northern boundary will be aligned on Boundary Road then north up Charlemont Road and then east along the current Marshall / Connewarre boundary to the Barwon River. The southern boundary will remain at Lower Duneed Road.

Mount Duneed & Connewarre to Armstrong Creek (proposed) (Cont’d) The eastern boundary will be Barwon Heads Road then north up Baenschs Lane following between property titles to the Barwon River. This will be a new suburb and it is proposed to be named Armstrong Creek. Australia Post will implement a new post code of 3217 over this suburb.

Armstrong Creek

Grovedale & Marshall to Charlemont (proposed) The western boundary to be aligned at Surf Coast Highway. The northern boundary to be aligned to the Geelong-Warnambool railway line to Reserve Road then east along this roadway to intersect at the Barwon Heads Road and then north to the railway line again then follow along this railway line to intersect with the Waurn Ponds Creek.

Grovedale & Marshall to Charlemont (proposed) (Cont’d) The southern boundary is to be aligned at Boundary Road then north up Charlemont Road, then east along the current Marshall / Connewarre boundary to the Barwon River. This will be a new suburb and it is proposed to be named Charlemont (pronounced Sharl- a-mont). Australia Post will implement a new post code of 3217 over this suburb.

How do I make a submission? A submission must be made in writing to Council. Verbal submissions are unable to be recorded. Submissions must include your full name, address and contact details. A submission must state how Council has not adhered to Department of Sustainability and Environment - Guidelines for Geographic Names 2010. If you are wishing to propose a new suburb name you must do this in writing and provide Council with historical data on the name.

All suburb names must adhere to the criteria of the Office of Geographical Place Names. They must be unique and not exist within Australia and be easy to pronounce and spell.
