Women writers Women writers Jeanette Winterson's Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit (1985) was a very popular novel. It tells the story of a young girl who rebels against her strict family life. The book was made into a television series.

Multicultural English literature Some novelists write about being English and being of a different ethnic origin. The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi (1990) is the funny story of a young British boy, of an Indian father and British mother, growing up in a London suburb.

Poetry and speech Benjamin Zephaniah, a British writer from the Caribbean, uses rap rhythms to write poetry. He says he started writing his own poetry because he didn't like the poetry he has to read at school.

Strange stories Some modern authors write stories about strange animals, violent human beings and bizarre events. One of the best writers of such stories was Angela Carter (1940-1992). In The Magic Toyshop (1967), the reader is never sure if Melanie, the teenage heroine, is going mad, dreaming or under the spell of her uncle's magic puppets. The book was made into a film.
