THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CROSS

Romans 5:6-11 6.For while we were still helpless, at the appointed moment, Christ died for the ungodly. 7.For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. 8.But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us!

9.Much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by His blood, we will be saved through Him from wrath. 10. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life! 11. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Holman Christian Standard Bible

5 THINGS THE CROSS SIGNIFIES

1. What God Thinks of My Sin

God Hates Sin  Romans 8:3 “God… condemned sin in the flesh by sending His own Son in flesh… as a sin offering”

God Hates Sin condemned sin in the flesh  Romans 8:3 “God… condemned sin in the flesh by sending His own Son in flesh… as a sin offering” Literally, to judge down. Jesus “died under the judgment due to our sin ”—Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words

2. What God Thinks of Me

God Loves Me  1 st John 4:9-10 “God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His One and Only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” The word propitiation has to do with the removal of divine wrath. Jesus’ death is the means that turns God’s wrath from the sinner – Holman note

God Loves Me  1 st John 4:9-10 “God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His One and Only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” God does not love us because Christ died for us; Christ died for us because God loved us. - John Stott

3. How I Now Stand Before God

Stated Negatively  Romans 8:1-3 “Therefore, no condemnation now exists for those in Christ Jesus”

Stated Positively  Colossians 1:22 “But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him” >>>

Stated Positively  Colossians 1:22 “But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him”

Stated Positively  Colossians 1:22 “But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him”

Stated Positively  Colossians 1:22 “But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him”

4. How I Now Relate to God

Reconciliation  2 nd Corinthians 5:19 “…in Christ, God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them…”  Romans 5:10 “For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son…”

Access  Ephesians 2:18 “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.”  Hebrews 10:19-22 “Therefore, brothers, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that He has inaugurated for us, through the curtain (that is, His flesh); let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. ”

5. That I Now Belong to God

Ransom  1 st Timothy 2:5-6 “For there is one God and one mediator between God and man, a man, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself—a ransom for all…” Ransom: The price of release. Used of the price paid for the freedom of a slave.

Redemption  In the Old Testament days: To buy back a property or person in order to keep it in the family  A person, to redeem, had to have the right to do so – by being related as a “kinsman redeemer.”

Redemption  1 st Peter 1:18-19 “For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things, like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.”

Ownership  1 st Corinthians 6:19-20 “…You are not your own, for you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body.”
