1 Out of the depths I cry to you, L ORD ; Lord, hear my voice. 2 Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy Why depths?

3 If you, L ORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. -Sin separates us from God

3 If you, L ORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. -Sin separates us from God Or fear you Relationship -Forgiveness leads to a change in our attitude to sin

7 Israel, put your hope in the L ORD, for with the L ORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. 8 He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins. - Don’t hope in anything else! -God is going to do something about the sin.

Redemption? “Redeem yourself” “Redeem online” “Road to redemption” “Early redemption charges” “Turn to a bank for redemption” “Beyond redemption”

What is redemption? 1.A transaction for an assessed price, to return something to its original purpose. E.g. Exodus 13:11-15, Leviticus 25:25-27

‘If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative is to come and redeem what they have sold. If, however, there is no one to redeem it for them but later on they prosper and acquire sufficient means to redeem it themselves, they are to determine the value for the years since they sold it and refund the balance to the one to whom they sold it; they can then go back to their own property. Leviticus 25:25-27

What is redemption? 1.A transaction for an assessed price, to return something to its original purpose. E.g. Exodus 13:11-15, Leviticus 25:25-27 2.Rescued from violence or death. E.g. 1 Samuel 14:45

But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the L ORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death. 1 Samuel 14:45

What is redemption? 1.A transaction for an assessed price, to return something to its original purpose. E.g. Exodus 13:11-15, Leviticus 25:25-27 2.Rescued from violence or death. E.g. 1 Samuel 14:45 3.Set free from a situation in which you cannot help yourself.

Psalm 49:7 No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them. Deuteronomy 7:8 But it was because the L ORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. We can’t do it!

Jesus’ mission Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” 1 Tim 2:5-6 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.

Jesus came to redeem us. To pay the price to restore us to our original purpose To rescue us from death To save us from slavery and exile all when we had no hope of doing it ourselves
