Moses The Servant of God Ex 13-14: By a strong hand God brought us out of Egypt

Exodus 13:1-2 13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Consecrate to Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine." God demanded the firstborn For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Cor 6:20

The Jewish Calendar God changed the Calendar: Abib is now 1 st month (Ex 12:2)

2 S G

Feast of Unleavened Bread 14 of Abib: Passover at evening 15-21 of Abib: Feast of unleavened bread lasted 7 days – 1 st and 7 th days were special holy days (Ex 12:16) – Unleavened bread: reminders of purity & sincerely God wanted children involved so they will learn about Him – God hopes children will ask about what we’re doing – Tell your children about God’s wonderful salvation That the Lord’s law might be in your mouth: God intends for us to talk about His law and His salvation God wanted families to discuss His wonderful salvation

Exodus 13:8-10 8 And you shall tell your son in that day, saying, 'This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up from Egypt.' 9 It shall be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the Lord's law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this ordinance in its season from year to year. Teach the next generation God knows we need memorials, lest we forget what He has done for us!

Do this to remember Me We need to be reminded to show forth Christ’s death to Sin

What happened to Passover during the wilderness wanderings? Israel told to keep the Passover in the 1 st month of 2 nd year at Mt Sinai (Num 9:2-4) No indication the nation kept the Passover again till Joshua 5:10 Hebrews 3:10-11 That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'"

Law of Firstborn: cost of redemption Cost the death of the firstborn males to redeem Israel from bondage No one redeemed firstborn of Egypt – they died God was willing to give His Son to redeem the firstborn of Israel The Israelites owed God their firstborn sons forever, because of His strong salvation of the nation from slavery Jews were to redeem their firstborn male donkeys – Donkeys represented the nation of Israel, God’s servants – Donkeys were unclean animals: Israel was like the nations – Firstborn male donkeys to be redeemed by a lamb (Jesus) – If not redeemed, then break their necks [stiff-necked Israel] Israel was given the opportunity to serve God

Exodus 13:14-16 14 So it shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, 'What is this?' that you shall say to him, 'By strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 15 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all males that open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.' 16 It shall be as a sign on your hand and as frontlets between your eyes, for by strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt." Teach the next generation God knows we need constant reminders!

Numbers 18:15-18 15 "Everything that first opens the womb of all flesh, which they bring to the Lord, whether man or beast, shall be yours (priests); nevertheless the firstborn of man you shall surely redeem, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem. 16 And those redeemed of the devoted things you shall redeem when one month old, according to your valuation, for five shekels of silver, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs. 17 But the firstborn of a cow, the firstborn of a sheep, or the firstborn of a goat you shall not redeem; they are holy. You shall sprinkle their blood on the altar, and burn their fat as an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma to the Lord. 18 And their flesh shall be yours (priests), just as the wave breast and the right thigh are yours. Some firstborn could be redeemed Firstborn clean animals belonged to God and He gave their flesh to priests!

Ex 32:9-10 And the Lord said to Moses, "I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! 10 Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation." Ex 33:3-6 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.“ 4 And when the people heard this bad news, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. 5 For the Lord had said to Moses, "Say to the children of Israel, 'You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do to you.'" Israel was a stiff-necked nation God warned them that He might not redeem them & break their neck!

God leads His People God tried to find the best pathway – Not through Philistines – tough warriors – Didn’t want to discourage Israel Led them by wilderness of Red Sea Took bones of Joseph (& his brothers) – Acts 7:16 says “our fathers” were carried back to Shechem & buried (happened in Josh 8:30-35) – Joseph wanted it clear that his hopes were in the promises to Abraham in Israel God led His people as a Shepherd using a cloud by day & fire by night The Good Shepherd of Israel

Ex 14: Red Sea Crossing God intends to gain glory over Pharaoh (v.4) – God’s plan involves luring Pharaoh to his death – God has Israel encamp between Migdol & sea Pharaoh & his officers change their minds – Realized they have lost their slaves – Pharaoh pursues with chariots & catches up at Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon (v.9) God hopes this event will convince the Israelites to trust Him no matter what happens in the future – but it didn’t work for most! If miracles can change us forever, this one should have!

Exodus 14:10-12 10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, "Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn't we say to you in Egypt, 'Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians'? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!" After all the plagues, still they lacked faith They didn’t enter the land because of unbelief!

Exodus 14:13-14 13 And Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace." The Salvation of the Lord God does the impossible! He simply wants us to believe and trust Him.

Exodus 14:15-18 15 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17 I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen." God’s glory over Pharaoh God just needed the Israelites to move forward in Faith!

The Lord’s Great Salvation The Angel moves between Israel & Egyptians Cloud brought darkness to Egyptians & fire brought light to Israelites all night Moses held his hand over the sea & God drove it back with a strong east wind Israel crossed during the night: they were baptized into the cloud and the sea (1Cor 10) At the end of the night, God confused Pharaoh’s army & pulled off the chariot wheels – Many Egyptians panicked! Knew Yahweh fought for Israel – At daybreak, the sea closed over Pharaoh’s army in the sea – not one of them survived! (v.28) This helped the Israelites to fear God and put their trust in Him (v.31)

1 Corinthians 10:1-13 1 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. The impact of miracles doesn’t last! Don’t dream that you would be a different person if you could see a miracle!

1 Corinthians 10:1-13 6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. This happened as a warning for us! What will make it different for You?

Hebrews 11:13-16 NIV 13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country — a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. Faith makes the difference! We must live as strangers now, putting our hope in the city to come

Lessons from Today Remember Passover & Unleavened Bread: God wants us to aim to be like Jesus – Aim high! Be thankful for God’s salvation and tell others about what God has done for you Remember the cost of redemption: God and Jesus paid the price to redeem us from Sin Witnessing miracles doesn’t necessarily lead to lasting commitment to God – we must have Faith! God will do the impossible – we just need to believe and trust Him to change us into His children Be careful! No matter how strong we think we are spiritually, we can still fail
