Republican Policies Favoring Business HIGH PROTECTIVE TARIFFS -Congress intended to protect US Manufacturers -Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act=highest tariffs in history LITTLE ENFORCEMENT OF ANTI-TRUST LAWS -Business given more freedom -Lots of mergers in the 1920’s LOWER TAXES FOR WEALTHY & CORPORATIONS -Congress cut taxes for them -Made more taxes for average people

HARDING Foreign Policy Won with “return to normalcy” campaign – Focus on production and prosperity at home Refused to join League of Nations Civil Rights Urged rights for African Americans & supported anti-lynching bill Military Wanted arms reductions Sponsored Washington Naval Conference Supported US in World Court

HARDING Scandals Appointed dishonest friends to cabinet positions – “The Ohio Gang” Teapot Dome Scandal – Secretary of Interior leased oil-rich gov’t land to 2 friends for bribes – 1 of worst scandals in US History Another guy stole millions from project for returning veterans

COOLIDGE Harding’s VP Became president when Harding died in 1923 “Silent Cal” – hardly spoke in public “Do nothing Cal” – he was inactive in business policy Get’s lots of credit for business growth in 1920’s – Why? He didn’t do anything to get in their way.

HOOVER Son of Quaker, self-made millionaire He predicted end of poverty if he was elected – Problem here, the Great Depression started during his presidency “Rugged Individualism” – Education – equal opportunity – will to succeed – = high American living standards
