3 The Linked Pair Pilot - Background GCSE in Applications of Mathematics & GCSE in Methods in Mathematics Two separate qualifications that together cover the programme of study Both qualifications are tiered with two units, both externally- assessed in November and June series Learners must be entered for both qualifications Pilot initially accredited until Summer 2013

Expected that QCDA / Ofqual will extend accreditation in-line with mainstream GCSE (final assessments Summer 2015) Following evaluation, the pilot will inform the new mainstream mathematics GCSE in 2015 For more information on the background of the pilot, visit the QCDA website QCDA website

5 GCSE in Methods in Mathematics - Structure ‘Approaches the subject in a purely mathematical manner’ Two equally weighted units: Methods 1: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Probability Methods 2: Number, Algebra, Geometry The content of Unit 2 builds on the content of Unit 1 Each paper assesses all Assessment Objectives Traditional question and answer booklet, scanned and marked by examiner online

6 GCSE in Applications in Mathematics ‘The applications of mathematics in real-life, everyday contexts, and an introduction into financial and business applications’ Two equally weighted units: Apps 1: Number, Financial and Business applications, Algebra, Geometry, Measures, Statistics Apps 2: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measures, Probability Each paper assesses all Assessment Objectives Functional elements make up 20-30% of Higher Tier papers and 30-40% of Foundation Papers Traditional question and answer booklet, scanned and marked by examiner online

7 Teaching Time for Linked Pair Pilot There is no set recommended teaching time for the pilot QCDA’s evaluation will investigate how and over what length of time the pilot is taught It is suggested that schools may need extra teaching time to cover the additional content in the pilot We will share common teaching practice where possible and encourage centres to share their plans with each other

8 Contribution to performance points The contribution and points should be the same for Applications and Methods as for a mainstream GCSE Both GCSEs count as the maths indicator for school A*-C tables Only learners entered for both GCSEs will be able to count points from either qualification Applications will discount against the 2010 mainstream GCSE, so schools cannot count both qualifications in their performance tables (note: QCDA recommend that centres do not make learners take the pilot and the mainstream due to possible over-assessment)
