1
Functions in Sports Madrid – Rovaniemi 2013
2
Aims of the project O To find the best fitting functions for energy consumption and heartbeat O Inspect results and for example gender- based variance O The reliability of the functions in long-term O Comparison between sports
3
Measuring O Measured variables: heartbeat and energy consumption in every 30 seconds 20 points for graphs O Work in pairs: one student measured the variables while the other did the exercise O Heartbeatmonitors (manufactured by for example Polar) were used O There were two boys and two girls for each sport O Four sports: running, cycling, rowing and nordic walking
4
Some example data
5
Finding functions for heartbeat O The sport shown here is running O At first, we tried to fit a quadratic function and then several other models
6
Quadratic model
7
Functions of a higher degree O When we increased the power of the function, they seemed to resemble the measurements better
9
O This function fits well but it’s not valid in long-term
10
Logarithmic solution O This seems to be the best model hence the validity in long-term
11
Sine function O We tried to find out if there was any regularity in the function after two points O As we know, human heartbeat can’t reach 600 bpm
12
Comparison between boys and girls O It’s clear that we can’t make valid conclusions based on this project O The results illustrate our group and the variance inside it O Individual differences are a notable factor, since the group size is way too small for scientific research O If we had a group of 500 persons, this project would’ve been closer to a scientific study
14
Comparison between sports
16
O We want to thank our wonderful teachers and all the other participants
