1 Ammonia

2 History Fritz Haber (pictured) developed synthesised Ammonia, he received a Nobel Prize for this in 1918. Ammonia is important for fertilisers and explosives. Haber found a way to make ammonia using nitrogen contained in the air, he developed this with a man called Carl Bosch (pictured below).

3 The Haber-Bosch process was used by the Germans in the 1 st world war. They used the ammonia to produce explosives and sustain the war effort. Ammonia is a compound that has a Nitrogen atom connected to 3 Hydrogen atoms. Ammonia is a fertiliser that is very good for the nutritional needs for plants.

4 During World War 1, the production of ammonia shifted from fertilisers to explosives. Particularly a synthetic form of Chile saltpeter. This could easily then be changed for substances such as Gunpowder and High Explosives. It has been suspected that without this, Germany wouldn’t of been able to fight in the war or surrendered years earlier.
