Jupiter

 Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and by far the largest.  Jupiter is the fourth brightest object in the sky (after the Sun, the Moon and Venus ).

Density and volume  Jupiter is more than twice as massive as all the other planets combined  Jupiter has 1400 times the volume of earth but is only 318 times more massive. Thus, the mean density of Jupiter is about one- fourth that of earth  Jupiter probably has a core of rocky material amounting to something like 10 to 15 times Earth’s mass.

Atmosphere  The atmosphere is very deep, perhaps comprising the whole planet, and is somewhat like the Sun’s.  Jupiter is about 90% hydrogen and 10% helium with traces of methane, water, ammonia and "rock".

Temperature  Because of the temperature and pressure of Jupiter's interior, hydrogen is a liquid, not a gas. The liquid hydrogen is an electrical conductor and the source of Jupiter's magnetic field. This layer probably also contains some helium and traces of various “ices”.  Because of the low temperature of Jupiter’s upper atmosphere (-125  C/-193  F), white cirrus clouds form.  The temperature at the tops of these clouds is about -50  C (about -58  F), and the atmospheric pressure is about twice at sea- level on Earth.

"What if" the Earth and Jupiter exchanged places? For each planet in its new location, describe changes in the atmosphere and the surface.

Titan

Titan  Titan was the fifteenth of Saturn's satellites found.  It is the largest of Saturn ’ s moons.  Titan has an orange glow from its photochemical smog, rich in organic material.

Atmosphere  Titan's atmosphere is so thick and hazy that its solid surface is slightly smaller than Ganymede’s. Titan is nevertheless larger in diameter than Mercury and larger and more massive than Pluto.  Titan does have an atmosphere. At the surface, its pressure is more than 1.5 bars (50% higher than Earth's). It is composed primarily of molecular nitrogen (as is Earth's) with no more than 6% argon and a few percent methane.

Surface  Titan’s surface temperature appears to be about -178  C (-289  F).  The surface is about half water-ice and half rocky material.

"What if" you traveled in a space craft to Saturn's moon Titan. What type of vehicle might you need to move about on the surface of this moon?
