Nitrogen and Oxygen Family By Dana Wierzbicki, Lisa Malloy and Heather Hanlon

The Nitrogen Family N P As Sb Bi  All the elements in the Nitrogen Family have 5 electrons in there outermost energy level

Nitrogen Makes up 1/3 of the earths atmosphere It is a Non metal Nitrogen is used to protect historic documents It was discovered in Scotland in 1772 It dissolves in water and it is colorless

Phosphorus Discovered by Henning Brown in Germany, 1669 It can glowing the dark It its found in 85% of our bones Comes in 4 different forms: white, yellow, red and black These forms are used in fireworks, toothpaste, detergent, pesticides and more

Arsenic Discovered in ancient times It is used to make glass is a metalloid with mostly nonmetallic properties It has a yellow form, and several gray and black forms it can be poisonous

Antimony Poor conductor of heat It is found in 100 mineral species It is used to make batteries, and tracer bullets

Bismuth obtained as a by- product of mining and refining lead, copper, tin, silver and gold.leadcopper tinsilvergold Bismuth is usually mixed with other metal Used in such things as automatic fire sprinkler systems, fire detection systems and electrical fuses

The Oxygen Family O S Se Te Po

Oxygen Discovered by Joseph Priestly in 1774 Helps people breathe Its is colorless, odorless and tasteless

Sulfur Used to make paper Most sulfur compounds have a strong odor Sulfur is also a good insulator

Selenium Red powder that turns black when exposed to air Used to make photo copies, and decolorize glass It is toxic in large amounts

Tellurium can be toxic if handled not carefully has a silvery white appearance when pure it has a metallic luster cost about 100 dollars a pound It is added in cast iron for chill control used in thermoelectric devices

Polonium Has 27 isotopes, all of which are radioactive discovered in1898 by Polish-French chemist Marie Curie she named it after her homeland of Poland used for space satellites and space probes.
