Core Content ZSC-05-2.3.1 ZStudents will: キ describe the circulation of water (evaporation and condensation) from the surface of the Earth, through the crust, oceans, and atmosphere (water cycle); キ explain how matter is conserved in this cycle. Water, which covers the majority of the Earth ’ s surface, circulates through the crust, oceans, and atmosphere in what is known as the water cycle. Z DOK 2

Today’s Agenda ZComplete Bell Ringer ZDiscuss bell ringer ZI can ZNotes ZAssignment
5
I can ZI can describe the carbon cycle. ZI can explain why the carbon cycle is important to humans.
6
What is the water cycle? The continuous movement of water between Earth’s surface and the air is the water cycle. All water on Earth is recycled constantly. groundwater watershed precipitation condensation transpiration evaporation runoff
7
What is the carbon cycle? The carbon cycle is the continuous exchange of carbon among living things. CO 2 in air dissolved CO 2 in water marine plankton remains rock respiration decomposition photosynthesis coal natural gas oil combustion (human-made and natural)
8
What is the nitrogen cycle? The nitrogen cycle is the continuous trapping of nitrogen gas into compounds in the soil and its return to the air. nitrogen gas in air (N 2 ) nitrogen fixation denitrification absorption decomposition ammonia nitrite nitrate
9
What roles do plants play in the water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles? Water cycle: Plants release water to the atmosphere through transpiration. Carbon cycle: Plants turn carbon dioxide into carbon-rich foods. Nitrogen cycle: Plants play a key role in housing bacteria that fix nitrogen and transform it into a usable form that other plants can build with.
10
Homework due on Tuesday ZDiagram the carbon cycle. ZIn which part of the carbon cycle is carbon trapped for the longest time? Z Write a brief summary of the carbon cycle. (1-2 paragraphs)
11
Exit question ZExplain why the carbon cycle is important.
