Naming Unsaturated Hydrocarbons Halides and Aromatics: Type 1 - Cycloalkanes
2
Aromatics: At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to: 1. Define an alkyl halide 2. Define an aromatic hydrocarbon 3. Name and write the formulas for alkyl halides and cycloalkanes.
3
Alkyl Halides Organic compound with a halogen General formula will have the halogen as a side chain like: Fluoro Chloro Bromo Iodo
4
Naming Examples 2-fluoro-3-methylpentane CH 3 -CH-CH-CH 2 -CH 3 |F|F | CH 3
5
Naming Examples 1-chloro-4-methylpentane CH 3 -CH-CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 2 | Cl | CH 3

Bill Gates' Rules Here is a list of 11 things that many high school and college graduates did not learn in school. In his book, Bill Gates talks about how feel-good, politically-correct teachings created a full generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept has set them up for failure in the real world. RULE 10 Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
7
Cycloalkanes Cycloalkanes are saturated hydrocarbons in a ring structure. They tend to have strong aromas. Smaller ring structures have stressed bonds that will require a spring, larger ring structures will not have stressed bonds and will not require a spring. They are named with the prefix cyclo-.

Cycloalkanes
9
Cycloalkanes and Substituent Groups The longest chain is named last. The shorter chain is the alkyl group for one and the cyclo for two.
10
Practice of Cyclo- alkanes: Be certain to have the lowest #’s possible!

Things You Can Learn From Your Dog!! Stay close to your loved ones in times of distress. When you want something badly, dig for it!
12
Aromatics: Let’s see if you can: 1. Define an alkyl halide 2. Define an aromatic hydrocarbon 3. Name and write the formulas for alkyl halides and cycloalkanes.
13
Naming Examples 2-chloro-4-methylpentane CH 3 -CH-CH 2 -CH-CH 3 | Cl | CH 3
14
Let’s Build Some Alkyl Halides and Aromatics
15
Naming Unsaturated Hydrocarbons Aromatics: Type 2 - Benzene
16
Aromatics: At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to: 1. Define an aromatic hydrocarbon 2. Explain the difference between cycloalkanes and benzenes. 3. Name and write the formulas for alkyl halides, cycloalkanes and benzenes.
17
Benzene The 3 double bonds rotate rapidly (resonate) giving benzene a great deal of stability. Benzene is the most produced organic compound. What is the most produced inorganic compound?? Sulfuric Acid!!
18
Practice Naming Methylbenzene (Toluene) 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene
19
Familiar Saying Eschew the implement of correction and vitiate the scion. Spare the rod, spoil the child!

Exit Quiz: Cycloalkanes
23
More Cycloalkanes: 1, 4-dimethylcyclohexane 1-methyl-3- propyl- cyclopentane
