Fossil Fuels and Crude Oil

Group 1 Presentation time

Write down all the information you can about the molecule

Objectives To be able to state that crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons To be able to recognise an alkane To be able to state a formula linking number of Carbon atoms to Hydrogen atoms in alkanes. To consider the best way to separate the alkanes out of a mixture

Modelling Hydrocarbons Working in threes, build these four hydrocarbons Can you work out a link between number of Carbons and Hydrogens? If I said these are saturated hydrocarbons what do you think I might mean?

What is Crude Oil? Crude Oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons of different carbon chain lengths (c-c-c) Mainly these hydrocarbons are Alkanes like the ones you have just been building. So how could we separate these?

Distillation If these hydrocarbons are of different lengths how can we separate into different chain lengths? If these hydrocarbons are of different lengths how can we separate into different chain lengths? Answer these questions while watching the video: – What is crude oil? – What is a hydrocarbon? – What is a fraction? – What happens during fractional distillation?

Complete these sentences Hydrocarbons are... compounds made of carbon and hydrogen only Alkanes are hydrocarbons whose molecules are... saturated Crude oil is a mixture of... hydrocarbons
