Wind-to-Hydrogen in the Northern Great Plains Energy & Environmental Research Center University of North Dakota Basin Electric Power Cooperative

Wind-to-Hydrogen (W2H2) Project Basin Electric Power Cooperative (BEPC) is the lead organization. Wind-to-hydrogen demonstration in Minot, North Dakota. Electricity dispatched from any of three wind farms. Hydrogenics Corporation electrolysis and fueling station. Internal combustion (IC) vehicles. North Central Research Extension Center

Project Overview and Site NDSU North Central Research Extension Center in Minot, ND

System Details Electrolyzer –Hydrogenics HySTAT A-30 –Output 30 Nm 3 /hr (2.7 kg/hr) at full capacity Compression/storage –80 kg of storage at 6000 psi –Three pairs of cascading cylinders (six total) Dispenser –5000 psi dispensing pressure Hydrogen use –Three Chevy ½-ton pickups converted for H 2, E-85, or gasoline –IC engine genset converted to run on H 2

Project Goals Installation and demonstration of hydrogen fueling station Dynamic scheduling/ modeling Demonstration of hydrogen end use

Results Hydrogen fueling station site Electrolyzer system Dynamic scheduling software Hydrogen end use

Wind-to-Hydrogen Fueling Station Site Site work complete Storage installed on-site NDSU North Central Research Extension Center in Minot, ND

Hydrogenics Electrolyzer Electrolyzer assembly complete and will ship in spring 2007 Storage assembly complete and installed at the site Dispenser complete and will ship in spring 2007 HyStat Electrolyzer Dispenser Electrolyzer Stacks

Dynamic Scheduling/Modeling Dynamic scheduling system programming nearly complete (beta version currently running). Final testing will be completed upon system start-up.

H 2 End-Use Demonstration Trifuel (gasoline/E-85/hydrogen) engine conversion provided by AFVTech on three Chevrolet trucks. IC generator converted to operate on H 2.

Schedule Winter 2006 –Electrolyzer construction –Finalize on-site details Spring 2007 –Install system water supply line –Install electrolyzer and dispenser –Perform on-site electrical and mechanical work Summer 2007 –Perform system start-up and shakedown –Verify dynamic scheduling software performance –Begin full system operation

Deliverables Develop the design, equipment, and process requirements for dispatching wind energy to the electrolyzer. Demonstrate each of the components required to support the dynamic scheduling. Specify and construct a hydrogen generation and fueling facility. Analyze the economic viability of the project. Develop safe design practices for O&M.
