Transport in Plants
2
Plants require: CO 2 Light O2O2 H2OH2O Minerals Macronutrients (besides C, H, O) Ca, K, Mg, N, P, S Micronutrients B, Cl, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Zn Sugar
3
Water goes up the Xylem From root To leaf then Transpires
4
Sugar made In the leaf Goes down The Phloem
5
How do roots absorb water and minerals?
6
How does xylem transport xylem sap? Nearly all of the energy to drive the process comes from the sun Unbroken chains of water molecules fill xylem vessels Evaporation at the top pulls water up from the bottom
7
How does xylem transport xylem sap? Water vapor escapes through stomata
9
How does phloem transport phloem sap? Food (sugars) are then moved from leaves to the rest of the plant
10
Not all herbivores chew leaves… Some exploit sap E.g., aphids tap sieve-tube elements for phloem sap
