Session 4: Assessment What strategies will provide evidence of student learning? A2: Demonstrate understanding & learning target skills – Provides a portfolio of student work – Ability to assess a variety of subjects, including writing, science, health, etc. Labeling Writing Drawing – Student access to Text-to-Speech function Students with difficulty reading have access to directions and/or learning targets Students can hear their spelling to make changes A6: Formative Assessment Data – Make in-the-moment instructional adjustments – Modify future lessons – Give targeted feedback

Session Objectives and Success Criteria Lesson Objective: Participants will be able to create a Pixie template to use as formative assessment allowing them to give targeted feedback to students and a way for students to assess and monitor their own progress. Success Criteria: By the end of the session, participants will be able to: – Create a story template in Pixie with Pages Text Pictures/Photos Sound – Determine how the template will allow the teacher to Give targeted feedback Make in-the-moment instructional adjustments Help students monitor own progress and assess work

Adding Pages Pixie is in the “Shortcuts” folder. Press “Page” to add more pages. Arrows at the bottom let you go to the other pages.

Adding Text Press the “T” at the top for Text. Double click to type. Click outside the box and you can move the box.

Talking Interface Text boxes and stickers can be read with the “talking interface.” Tip: Put directions and/or learning targets onto a template for students who have difficulty reading. Students can use to “read” their spelling and make changes.

Adding Photos/Clipart You can copy and paste photos or clipart into Pixie just like Microsoft Office. Tip: I pre-save relevant photos into a folder for students to access.

Adding Pictures Or students can draw their own pictures.

Adding Sound You can have students record their voices. The sound will embed directly onto the page.

Saving Formats If you save, it will be a “Pixie” file, only read by Pixie. Or you can “Export” by going to “File”…”Export File formats include:

Using as Formative Assessment How can I use Pixie as a Formative Assessment if students are given learning targets and success criteria beforehand? – Given clear learning targets and success criteria, students can Assess their own progress Monitor their progress Have the computer read their work and then make changes – Teachers can View student portfolio of work Assess multiple subjects Make in-the-moment adjustments to instruction Modify future lessons Give targeted feedback to individual students
