What is Boccia? Italian in origin Similar to lawn bowling One of the World’s fastest growing sports for severely disabled persons Can be played individually, in pairs or teams

Classification For fair and equitable competition, players are placed (classified) into one of five divisions of play according to their ability A classification team consists of a Sports Technician, a Physiotherapist and a Doctor

BC1 Very poor balance Poor trunk control and strength Can hold the boccia ball and has a good enough range of motion to consistently propel the ball onto the court

BC2 Poor functional strength in all extremities Poor trunk control Can propel a manual wheelchair Cylindrical or spherical grasp

BC3 Dependant on ramp to propel boccia ball Dependant on an electric wheelchair or assistant for mobility No sustained grasp or release Includes severely disabled wheelchair athletes whose disability is of a non-cerebral origin

BC4 Wheelchair athletes with severe locomotor dysfunction in all four limbs of a non-cerebral origin Range of movement is poor either due to lack of strength or lack of flexibility Poor strength or control of grasp and release

Open Disability can be of a cerebral or non- cerebral origin May or may not use a wheelchair Can propel a boccia ball consistently across the v-line

The Game Continues A total of 4 ends are played (6 for team games) with the players alternating who starts each end. At the end of the match, the points per end are totaled and the player with the most points is the winner In the case of a tie, an extra end is played
