Purpose The goal of the Careers for Life Center (CLC) is to provide career development programs to entry level main campus employees and non-union and non- managerial employees employed on the main campus between July 1998 and Sept. 2005 who are seeking clinical careers in nursing, radiology technology or respiratory therapy. Center Hours and Staffing Hours of operation are Tuesday and Thursday from 8am-4:30pm and Wednesday from 7:30am-11am. The number to the center is 313-916-4100. The CLC is staffed by Zipora Golenberg through a partnership with Jewish Vocational Services. She has more than 20 years of experience providing career counseling, predominately in the Detroit area. Career Guidance and Counseling Details: This program provides assistance with internal job searches, skills assessments and training, resume and interviewing assistance, and general career coaching. Eligibility: All system employees initially, to be weighed heavily in favor of main campus entry level employees and non-union and non- managerial employees employed on the main campus between July 1998 and Sept. 2005. Career Guidance and Counseling (continued) Skills Assessments are provided for employees to assist in determining skill level in the areas of reading and math. These can be requested by interested employees but are required for individuals who have not obtained a HS diploma or GED and/or have not successfully completed at least two college level courses. Participants will receive a meal pass on the day of the testing and receive a one-time taxable stipend of $25 at the completion of the entire assessment. Partnership: We have teamed with Focus:HOPE to provide the skills assessment and are currently developing the subsequent training courses. Professional Development Programs (PDPs) Details: The PDPs provide pathways for employees to obtain a “Career for Life” in the critically short, market sensitive positions of nursing, radiology technology, and respiratory therapy. Participants will be assisted in earning degrees, provided intense careers counseling, and receive financial support. Mentoring and Coaching Details: This program is designed to provide support and assistance to help participants propel their careers forward by matching them with main campus system leaders. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in workshops focusing on career enhancement, skill building and formal coaching. There will be approximately 20-25 mentor/mentee pairs per year. We are currently evaluating expressions of interest from vendors and following up on internal leads for an external consultant to develop this program.
