Ch. 6.4- 6.6: Organelles of the Cell 6.4: Objectives Identify the role of nucleus in a cell. Describe how the functions of ribosomes, the ER, and golgi bodies are related. Summarize the path of cellular products through membranes. Vocab. Nuclear envelope nucleolus ribosome E.R. Golgi Apparatus Vacuole Lysosome
2
Cell organelles build, package, export, and recycle products as directed by directions in DNA. Nucleus: DNA has code for making proteins. Molecules carry instructions fr. DNA through nuclear envelope to ER (connected to nuc. envelope) Ribosomes docked on ER (rough ER) make proteins that are packaged in the ER and modified Products made by E.R. are transported out of cell by vesicles that pinch off E.R. and fuse w/ Golgi and/or plasma membrane. Transport through Continuous Membranes in Cells
3
Golgi Apparatus Modifies, stores, & routes proteins and products to their next destination. “Shipping Center” One side receives/ other side ships out Vesicles pinch off Golgi and fuse w/ plasma membrane. Vesicles: Membrane bound sacs for transort
4
Transport through Continuous Membranes in Cells Smooth E.R.: Part of E.R. lacking ribos. Build lipids Continuous w/ rough E.R. Vacuoles: Lg. Membrane bound sacs for: Storage of nutrients (starches, water, pigments, poisons) Contractile vacuoles expel water and propel cells in motion

Ch. 6.5: Chloroplasts & Mitochondria 6.5: Objectives Compare & contrast the functions of chloroplasts and mitochondria. Vocab. Chloroplast Mitochondria
6
Chlorplasts Contain photosynth. Pigments (chlorophyll) Photosynthesis Plants cells Double membrane Mitochondria Releases energy fr. Food in form of ATP (chemical energy) Internal folds increase surface area for more ATP production. “power house” All eukaryote cells (plants & animals) Double membrane
7
Ch. 6.6: Parts that Assist Cell Movement 6.6: Objectives Describe the role of the cytoskeleton in cell movement. Compare & contrast the functions of flagella and cilia. Explain why a cell can be described as a coordinated unit. Vocab. microtubule Microfilament Flagella cilia
8
Cytoskeleton Network of fibers extending through cytoplasm. Fibers extend, dismantle, and slide past one another as needed for motion Types of fibers: Microtubules: hollow protein tubes Microfilaments: thin, solid protein rods

Flagella & Cilia Flagella Long, thin, whip-like structure of microtubules. Ex: sperm cells Cilia Short hairs Paddle like movement when they work together.
