2 Directing  Refers to the process of  instructing  guiding,  counseling,  motivating  leading people in the organization to achieve its objectives.

3 Some definitions :  “Directing involves determining the course, giving order and instruction and providing dynamic leadership” – Marshall  “Activating means and moving into action- supplying simulative power to the group”- G.R Terry

4 Direction as a function:  performed by top level management in order to achieve organizational goals.  Very important and necessary function of management.  Consists of the process and techniques utilized in issuing instructions and making certain that operations are carried as originally planned.

5 Direction as a function:  A key managerial function to be performed by the manager along with planning, organizing, staffing and controlling.  Is a continuous process initiated at top level and flows to the bottom through organizational chain of command.  Initiates action  Integrates efforts of employees  Guides employees  Facilitates introduction of change  Brings stability

6 Direction as a function:  Directing techniques must help every individual to contribute to his maximum level.  Harmony of objectives: Good directing should provide harmony by convincing that employee rewards & efficiency go hand in hand.  Unity of command: A person should receive orders from a superior only. Adherence to this principle ensures effective direction.

7 Supervision  Process of guiding the efforts of employees & other resources to accomplish the desired objectives.  Acts as a link b/w workers &management.  Supervisor ensures performance of work according to the targets set.  Analyses the work performed & gives feedback.  Acts as a guide to the workers.  Sorts out internal differences& helps in maintaining friendly relations.

9 Features  Pervasive Function - Directing is required at all levels of organization. Every manager provides guidance and inspiration to his subordinates.  Continuous Activity - Direction is a continuous activity as it continuous throughout the life of organization.  Human Factor - Directing function is related to subordinates and therefore it is related to human factor. Since human factor is complex and behavior is unpredictable, direction function becomes important.  Creative Activity - Direction function helps in converting plans into performance. Without this function, people become inactive and physical resources are meaningless.

10 Features  Executive Function - Direction function is carried out by all managers and executives at all levels throughout the working of an enterprise, a subordinate receives instructions from his superior only.  Delegate Function - Direction is supposed to be a function dealing with human beings. Human behavior is unpredictable by nature and conditioning the people’s behavior towards the goals of the enterprise is what the executive does in this function. Therefore, it is termed as having delicacy in it to tackle human behavior.
