4 3 “ A Rose By Any Other Name….” l In America we call it Vital Records. l In England they call it Civil Registration. l See your Country of Research & Read the Research Outline for Vital Records Sources and Information.

5 4 Types of Vital Records : l Birth and/or Christening l Marriage l Divorce l Death and/or Burial

6 5 VITAL RECORDS  Contain a wealth of Genealogical information.  Civil governments have created records of births, marriages, divorces, and deaths.  We call these “VITAL RECORDS” because they refer to essential events in a person’s life.

7 6 BIRTH RECORDS  Generally contain:  Child’s name.  Sex  Date and Place of birth. Records of the 20 th Century provide additional details:  Name of hospital.  Place of Birth and Occupation of Parents.  Marital status of Mother and sometimes Mother’s Maiden Name and # of other children born to Mother.

10 9 MARRIAGE RECORDS

11 10 MARRIAGE INTENTIONS: Notice of an intended marriage published by Civil Authority. Intentions were recorded in town meeting books and published for a period of time prior to the marriage ceremony.

13 12 MARRIAGE RECORDS There are a number of documents that have been used in the U.S. in connection with the civil Authorization and registration of marriages. MARRIAGE LICENSE : document issued by Civil authority authorizing the performance of a marriage. Usually includes: Names of both parties. Date and Place of issuance of the license. Signature & Title of the issuing official.

14 13 Marriage license-Continued :  In some cases it can include the ages or dates and places of birth of the bride and groom, their addresses, occupation and the names of their parents. Records issued by the county or town. MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE:  Official document stating the marriage took place..

17 16 MARRIAGE RETURN: Report of the facts of a marriage returned to Civil Authority by the Officiator of the marriage.  Names of Bride and Groom.  Date and Place of Marriage.  Signature and Title of Officiator.  Sometimes a Minister or Justice of the Peace would file marriage returns on an annual basis and some were never filed at all. Usually Includes:

19 18 MARRIAGE REGISTER: Marriages performed in a civil jurisdiction.  Entry MAY include simply the names of the bride and groom and the date of marriage. These records found at the town and county level. The town and county offices often destroyed the marriage licenses and returns after the facts of the marriage was recorded in a marriage register.

21 20 MARRIAGE BOND Document executed to guarantee that no impediments Existed to an intended marriage. MARRIAGE BANNS: Notice of intended marriage published by clergy. Often read before the congregation on 3 successive Sundays.

22 21 CONSENT: Sometimes courthouse records will include a document Giving the consent of a parent or guardian for the Marriage of a minor child. Useful in identifying the Father of the bride or groom and indicating an Approximate age of the person that the consent was Required. REMEMBER! Marriage Bonds, Licenses, Banns and Intentions are Not evidence of Marriage-only that marriage was Planned.
