1 Word of the Day 10/15/14 Formal Formal is an adjective.
The definition of formal is having a regular or orderly pattern or arrangement; bound. An example of how you might use formal in a sentence is: The unsatisfied customer lodged a formal complaint to the manager.

2 WARM UP List as many qualitative and quantitative observations about your neighbor’s hand as you can. . ANSWER: answers will vary Wrinkled Pinkish and tan color 5 large blue veins visible 5 fingers of different lengths Fingernails are made of different material than the skin Hair is present on back side but not on palm Shakes when hold very still Fingers are approximately 6 cm in length. A scientist notices something in their natural world

7 Observations An example of an observation might be noticing that many salamanders near a pond have curved, not straight, tails

8 Hypothesis A suggested solution to the problem. Must be testable
Usually written as If…Then… statements Predicts an outcome

9 Hypothesis An example of a hypothesis might be
“ If salamanders have curved tails then they are better adapted to a pollutant in the moist soil where they live.”

Directions: You will each create a tab foldable of the steps of the scientific method Insert picture of foldable Scanned picture

Directions: #2 students please hand out 4 pieces of blank paper to each student We will create the foldable in steps together. When you have successfully folded your paper hold it up so Mrs. Groom can check that you did it right.

23 Use your ruler to measure 3
Use your ruler to measure 3.5 cm from the top of the paper and mark it with your pencil. Fold the paper HORIZONTALLY at the mark. Write 1 on this paper in pencil 3.5 cm

24 Use your ruler to measure 5
Use your ruler to measure 5.0 cm from the top of the paper and mark it with your pencil. Fold the paper HORIZONTALLY at the mark. Write 2 on this paper in pencil 5.0 cm

25 Use your ruler to measure 8
Use your ruler to measure 8.0 cm from the top of the paper and mark it with your pencil. Fold the paper HORIZONTALLY at the mark. Write 3 on this paper in pencil 8.0 cm

Use your ruler to measure 12.0 cm from the top of the paper and mark it with your pencil. Fold the paper HORIZONTALLY at the mark. Write 4 on this paper in pencil 12.0 cm

27 Insert the paper with the #2 written on it under the paper with the #1 on it.
HOLD UP YOUR FLIPBOOK SO MRS. GROOM CAN CHECK THAT IT IS FOLDED CORRECTLY. STAPLE THE TOP OF THE FLIPBOOK 3 TIMES – SEE MRS. GROOM’S EXAMPLE Erase the numbers on the papers

Each flap/step of the scientific method will include: Key information and details related to that step in the scientific method. See Mrs. Groom’s example Work on your foldable flapbook until Mrs. Groom calls for clean up, then collect flapbooks in your period’s table folder in the bin.

#2 students please open your folder and hand out the scientific process reading Read the article and answer the questions on the back of the paper Hold onto your papers we will grade them and collect them at the end of class Allow students 10 minutes to read and answer questions on the back of the page, read the questions out loud before they read, tell them to underline key words and concepts related to the scientific method. Set timer for 10 minutes after read questions Students exchange papers, 10 points total, write name at bottom in pen or marker
