Remember… Think back to 1929… The stock market just crashed! President Hoover didn’t do much to help.. THE GREAT DEPRESSION had begun… Things went from bad to worse Then from worse to even more worse An important note … American’s began to believe capitalism had failed and maybe another system would be better.. Communist parties began to spring up… “A do nothing”

Along came FDR Promising American’s “A New Deal” He started programs to put people to work again (Recovery) WPA, CCC, TVA, ETC Also programs to build confidence in America (Reform) Like: Like FDICNRA FDR was very popular and won re-election in 1936 by a landslide.

So… How well did the “New Deal” work It did: Create jobs Make improvements like bridges & Dams Relieve anxiety End panic Most importantly… It restored faith in America

But… Deficit spending (spending $ you don’t have – borrowing-credit) couldn’t go on forever Something needed to happen to get the economy rolling… WWII Officially began in Europe in Sept. 1939 The USA was officially “neutral” but recognized the Business opportunity the war presented: Factories began to crank! People began to work! Planes !Ships !Tanks !Boots ! The economy boomed into full production! The depression has ended !

Meanwhile, in Europe… The Treaty of Versailles was turning out to be a big problem because: It blamed Germany for the war It made Germany take responsibility for causing the war Germany was made to PAY for the allied troops to stay in Germany to keep them (Germans) under control- for 15 years! German military was limited Germany had to pay the allies back for WWI - $33 million The German Gov’t was forced to sign the treaty under threat of attack

Naturally, most German people were unhappy about the Treaty of Versailles. These bad feelings festered & the German people became resentful Ticked off @ the allies the German people began a “German Pride” movement aka German Nationalism One activist, Adolph Hitler, started a political party called the “Nazis” Hitler gained power in 1933, just as FDR became Pres in the US

Hitler & The Nazis Had a plan… German Purity & Superiority Unite all persons of German ancestry in one nation. Ridding Germany of “inferiors”. Hitler & the Nazis used… propagandafearterror And Total Control to achieve their goals.

Fresh off WWI France, Great Britain & the US followed a plan of appeasement (to satisfy; pacify) The Allies did nothing when: Hitler began to build a military Hitler sent troops into the Rhineland Hitler made Austria part of Germany Hitler made ½ of Czechoslovakia part of Germany Hitler made the other ½ of Czechoslovakia part of Germany

Hitler made friends… Italy (Mussolini) & Japan (Hirohito) These formed the “Axis” powers of WWII “appeasement” ended in Sept. 1939 When Hitler invaded Poland. France & Britain declared war on Germany & WWII was on The USA remained neutral

You know … The old trade thing. US business make $ producing: tanksplanesguns And just about every other item the nations of Europe couldn’t produce because they were busy fighting Finally the US Had jobs! Businesses made profits Stock prices rose. Farmers could sell products Good economic times were back..

WWII began in Sept. 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland. Meanwhile, in Japan… 1920’s - Japan had peace & prosperity, building an economy based on trade. Raw materials Manufactured goods 1930’sThe great depression hit hard in Japan.. Trade stopped Factories closed Jobs were scarce

The Japanese Gov’t failed to solve the crisis (much like Hoover) Japanese “Nationalists” argued that Japan should have taken colonies when the western powers did. More raw material and more markets to sell finished products Better late than never. So… Military leaders began to gain more power. They followed the doctrine of militarism (the glorification of military and readiness for war.

Emperor Hirohito gained the support of the military. Hirohito & the military promoted the idea that Japan had a special Mission: Free Asian Nations from western imperialism. Japan made friends with Germany & Italy Influence of Great Britain, France & The US As Germany over-ran France, Japan took over the French colony of Indochina (Vietnam

Now… WWII was not just a European thing but it was also in the Pacific Dec 7, 1941 Japan attacks US bases in Guam, The Philippines, the wake Islands. And of course, Peal Harbor Hawaii The US public was outraged & patriotism soared Dec 8, 1942 US declares war on Japan…

So let look at the Axis of WWII Conditions in the countries were BAD! povertyunemploymentinflation The causes… Someone else's fault Germany – treaty of Versailles (France, Great Britain & USA) Japan- Western Imperialism is exploiting Asian resources & markets Italy- The treaty of Versailles- everyone on the winning side of WWI gets spoils of war EXCEPT ITALY!

The Solution… New leadership to restore national pride Germany - Adolph Hitler Hirohito - Japan Mussolini - Italy This leadership based on national pride is called Fascism. Fascism
