Filibusters wanted to free Texas from all of Spain. They wanted to join it to the U.S. or make it an independent country. Other filibusters simply wanted an adventure and wealth. *

4. The Philip Nolan Expedition
Came to TX as a mustang trader in 1791, three times with Sp. permission
worked for James Wilkinson
Sp. believed he was spying and was arrested in 1800, his 4th trip
Came with 20 men…40 miles from Waco
Nolan resisted arrest and was killed *

6. The Gutierrez-Magee Expedition
First led by Father Miguel Hidalgo, Sept. 16, 1810, for Mexican independence form Spain…captured and killed
Jose Bernardo Gutierrez, supporter of Hidalgo, attacked Texas and raised a small army with help of the U.S. when he met U.S. army officer Augustus William Magee.
130 volunteers, flying a solid green flag, they captured Nacogdoches in Aug. 1812
Sept. captured La Bahia…Magee died in winter
March 1813 they took San Antonio, 800 rebels defeating a force of 1,200 Spanish *

Meanwhile, Sp. officer Arredondo moves into Texas and after a clash, 1,000 rebels lay dead…ending the rebellion *

8. Pirates on the Coast
Henry Perry of the Gutierrez-Magee Expedition, with 300, took control of Galveston in 1815…which became home to pirates raiding Spanish ships
French Pirate Jean Lafitte,pirate and smuggler from Louisiana, fought for U.S. in War of 1812, pardoned of his crimes as a reward for service
Wanted to gain personal wealth from Sp. Ships
1820 U.S. Navy forced him to leave Galveston
He continued to raid ships and died a few year later *

10. The Long Expedition
Dr. James Long from Mississippi, angry about the Adams-Onis Treaty
Wanted Texas either independent or part of the U.S.
1819, with a force of 120, invaded Texas and captured Nacogdoches…500 Sp. troops then ran them out
1820 back to Texas and 1821 attacked La Bahia, but was captured
While awaiting trial, Long was shot and killed by a Sp. soldier *

Meanwhile, Jane Long, daughter, and their slave waited for James (in Texas)
In December, Jane gave birth to another daughter
The family struggled through the winter, fought off Karankawa Indians, and then returned to Mississippi
Jane would later return to Texas with Stephen F. Austin’s colonists.
She is called “The Mother of Texas” *

- at least four things listed that relate to the wanted person and the crimes he has committed
