Background Approximately ninety (90) percent of Guyana’s population resides in localities below sea level The country’s vulnerability to flooding is exacerbated by : its vast network of natural watercourses linear development and development of communities around seaports and coastal areas and coastal areas Comprehensive disaster risk reduction strategies have not been developed and..

Disaster management not a priority / strategic development issue Risk of inimical impacts on persons and property due to flooding are unacceptable - 2005 floods losses > G$90 Billion Government of Guyana is mobilizing to embark upon National Disaster Capacity Building Lead Agency - Civil Defense Commission (CDC) Already, five (5) key areas have been identified that once addressed, will strengthen the country’s disaster management capacity

Objective To improve Guyana’s disaster management capacity by: Strengthening institutional capability for disaster management at the national level Building institutional capacity for risk reduction at the national level Promoting disaster awareness and "preventative thinking" (through public education and awareness programs) Building local capacity (assess risk and identify mitigation measures) and Implementing vulnerability reduction & mitigation measures and manage emergencies at the local level
