1 SECTION 7: WHAT MEN AND BOY CAN DO IN ELIMINATION VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN OUR SOCIETY FOR PROJECT ALERT ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN VENUE: EXCELLENCE HOTEL OGBA, LAGOS DATE: 20 TH FEBRUARY 2008 PRESENTER: MRS JOSPHINE EFFAH CHUKWUMAN & ANDY NKEMNEME

2 OBJECTIVES This session shall attempt at 1. Diagnosing our Nigeria society in relation to violence against women. 2.Identify what men and boys could do in eliminating violence on women in our society 3.Enumerating strategies and actions in involving men in the movement against VAW

3 Module 1: Discussion on violence against women in Nigeria society. 1. Experience sharing from various states of the South West zone. 2.Discuss each case study in line with * What type of violence * Perpetrators of the violence * How could it have been prevented * What actions should have be taken * Where could succour and justice be received.

4 Module 2. Group work on what men and boys can do. Group A: what can men do in eliminating violence against women. Group A: What can boys do in eliminating violence against women.

5 Module 3: Strategies for increasing Men’s involvement in eliminating violence against women. 1.Present men as potential partners capable of playing a positive role in eliminating violence against women. 2.Support men to recognize and address violence on women close to them. 3. Create opportunities for men to learn the skills necessary to eliminate violence in women. 4.Encourage men to play active roles in the eliminate of violence against women. * providing succour and justice to abuse/violated women * play important role in re-enforcing positive social norms * regard violence on any person as barbaric and inhuman not withstanding whether the person is related t you or not * Gain support of family members to destroy out- dated and oppressive culture values. 5.Build partnerships with support groups for abuse women especially in the area of Advocacy and social justice. 6.Promote activities across the spectrum of prevention of VAW (SPECTRUM OF CHANGED e.g promoting community education, strengthening individual knowledge and skills, educating rights keepers, fostering coalition and network, community mobilization, financial access to justice, in fluency policy legislation.

6 Module 4: MEN, INVOLVEMENT AND SUPPORT ACTIVITIES ACROSS THE SPECTRUM OF CHANGE LEVELDEFINITIONMEN, Involvement and Support Activities. 1. Strengthening Individual Knowledge and Skills Enhancing an individual's capability of preventing injury or illness and promoting safety -Teach skills needed for restrain and self control. · Men should understand importance of peace, dignity and Human rights · Provide financial support to assist with access to justice 2. Promoting Community Education Reaching groups of people with information and resources to promote health and safety Partner with media · Run community workshops · Establish community taskforces · Train peer educators 3. Educating Providers Informing providers who will transmit skills and knowledge to others Expand content of gender training courses within NGO/CBO sector. · Should compromise the work organizations are doing; should help organizations understand how working with men improves their work and isn’t just new work. 4. Fostering Coalitions and Networks Bringing together groups and individuals for broader goals and greater impact Other Human Rights Activists. · Departments Of Government (Labour, Health, Education, Women Affairs,& social devpt). · Workers & Unions · Faith Based Organizatiion · Civic Organizations · Political Organizations · Community leaders and policy makers 5. Community Mobilization Supporting community members in their efforts to bring about change. Train community members in community mobilization strategies · Partner with advocacy organizations 6. Changing Organizational Practices Adopting regulations and shaping norms to improve health & safety Expand content of gender training courses within NGO/CBO sector. 7. Influencing Policy Legislation Developing strategies to change laws and policies to influence outcomes - Paternity Leave and time off to allow men to play a role in ANC · Governmental body to promote, organize and coordinate men’s involvement · Strengthen laws and empower the bodies responsible the enforcement of laws on domestic violence · Develop codes of good practice on men and gender · Make sure that Government involves all role players and follows up consistently

7 Conclusion: There are various types of violence against women in our society and they differ from society to society and from culture to culture, and men are the major perpetrator. Consequently men and women should work together in designing society/culture/class/religious group specific programmes and activities targeting preventing, access to justice, and rehabilitation of victims.

9 SESSION 8: THE WAY FORWARD ON MEN INVOLVEMENT ON ELIMINATING OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN FOR PROJECT ALERT ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN VENUE: EXCELLENCE HOTEL, IKEJA DATE: 20 TH FEBRUARY, 2008 FACILITATOR: ANDY NKEMNEME

10 OBJECTIVES: This session shall attempt at: 1.Identifying projects to embark upon individually at our states/locations. 2.Form a male support group for the elimination of violence against women. 3. Identifying projects for the male support Group

11 Module 1: DISCUSSION A.DISCUSSION: why do you think men should be concerned about violence against women? B.NOTE: i.Most men care deeply about the women and girls in their lives, whether they are their wives, girl friends, daughters, other family members or colleagues, fellow parishioners or neighbours. ii. When some men commit acts of violence against women, it becomes more difficult for women to trust men. In other words, as a result of the actions of some men, all men are seen as potential perpetrators of VAW. iii Men commit the vast majority of domestic and sexual violence and therefore have a special responsibility to end the violence. In other words, men need o work to en male violence.

12 Module 2: Exercise on how much courage does it take to promote Healthy Relationship. This Exercise is meant to i.Enable us situate our current level of courage to take specific actions that promotes healthy and equitable relationships. ii.Identify that practices in the promotion of healthy and equitable relationships. STEPS 1Display cardboards spectrum of courage 2.Participants cue up behind the spectrum on each statement. 3.Comments and encouragement from those on most courage or Above Average Courage.

13 Module 3: Exercise on Actions to embark on to promote eliminating of VAW 1.Each person to write out a short group of actions that men can take to prevent VAW and promote gender equity in your own relationship/constituency/community. 2.Place each action against the courage spectrum-participants cue behind and encourage themselves. 3.Divide participants into groups according to closeness of constituency to brainstorm and come out with projects that male support group could embark upon. 4. Presentation of the group work.

14 Conclusion - My Commitment I ……………………………………….. Hereby commitment myself, organization and constituency to this struggle in eliminating violence against women in the Nigeria society.
