A recent study from Gallup showed a startling 71% of employees are not engaged. What’s causing this? Where do you come in? Hopefully we have now all agreed that this is a highly valuable project, so now let’s look at why it is so important to have executive input, and what this looks like.

Organizational success with social media is fundamentally a leadership and management challenge, not a technology implementation. This quote is from a Gartner study. Success with social is about 20% technology and 80% leadership and communication. As a leader you want to get the most talent, energy, knowledge and innovation out of your employees. But how do you tap into that collective intelligence? And how do you go beyond simply connecting your workforce to actually seeing results from those connections? Social technology. Two of Gartner's lead analysts shared their experience working with more than 300 companies who successfully use social technologies. They identified 6 core principles that will help business leaders facilitate and capitalize on the new environment and its resources: Participation: social media tools only work if everyone participates Collective Purpose: everyone must understand the goal of participating to ensure useable outcomes Transparency: Everyone must be privy to each other's contributions so that content can be improved, corrected and allowed to evolve Independence: Every participant must be able to contribute anytime, without having to request admittance Capture and Contribute: contributions must be recorded and remain available for others to view, share and argue over Emergence: you can't predict what will happen in this collaborative state. Businesses today are required to move fast to keep up with the ever changing needs of consumers. This can be a challenge if there’s lack of visibility into what’s happening across and outside of the organization. Use Announcements for company-wide messaging Follow up on big news by sharing a Note with additional details Share key updates with All Company to keep your employees “in the know” Join Groups to follow the conversations and work taking place across teams Spend 20 mins/week scanning your Feed to stay abreast of activity As you go through the use cases, briefly demonstrate how easy it is to post an announcement or message, like or reply to a message, and scan through the Home feed. Encourage & Respond to Feedback
The majority of employees are disengaged and feel as though their input doesn’t matter. It’s essential to enable your employees to have a voice and show that you are listening. Ask an open-ended question Take note of Likes and Replies to your posts Encourage employees to Reply to your posts with questions and feedback As you go through the use cases, briefly demonstrate how easy it is to post an announcement or message, like or reply to a message, and scan through the Home feed. Observe real-time reactions and responses to your posts by taking note of “Likes” and Replies. Encourage employees to Reply to announcements with feedback and questions. Ask an open-ended question or post a poll seeking feedback on an issue or possible initiative. With the help of your network Community Managers, host periodic “YamJams” around a specific topic or hot-button issue to quickly capture employee insight. A “YamJam” is a live, Q&A session that takes place directly within the Yammer network. Host a YamJam

Bring Leaders & Teams Together
Leaders and teams today are dispersed across geographies and departmental silos. It’s important to stay on top of what your fellow executives are doing and make sure leadership is in alignment. Share regular reports and engage in discussion around these documents Create a Leadership Group As you go through the use cases, briefly demonstrate how easy it is to post an announcement or message, like or reply to a message, and scan through the Home feed. Create a Leadership Group where fellow executives can come together to discuss and share updates around the organization’s vision and goals. Share monthly/quarterly reports with Leadership and Board Members and engage in discussion around the documents that have been uploaded to the group. Feedback is powerful. Employees are encouraged by the feedback and reinforcement they receive from others, especially managers and executives. Post a Praise for a job well done As you go through the use cases, briefly demonstrate how easy it is to post an announcement or message, like or reply to a message, and scan through the Home feed. Click the “Like” button under a post that you find to be interesting or valuable to others in the organization. Post a “Praise” to one or several people for a job well done on a specific project or task. This could be anything from a new product launch, a key sales closing, a new marketing campaign, or a promotion. Accessing Yammer Access Yammer from your mobile device when you’re on the go. You can add in screenshots of your own network here to make this more relevant. Provide some assistance in setting up their mobile app if they’re not confident enough. The Yammer mobile applications are popular among leaders and executives who don’t spend a lot of time behind their desk. They can scan and access what’s happening while they’re on the move, which makes it much easier to stay abreast of what’s happening at their convenience.

Quick tips for engaging with colleagues
No need to be too formal! This is the opportunity for you to quickly engage with your teams and get a snapshot of what is happening on the front-line Keep most posts shorter than traditional communications - the idea is to engage and start discussions Ask questions! Don't be afraid to show your personality. Coach your executives on hitting the right tone, and using their real voice when communicating on Yammer. Focus on the value of direct engagement with employees at all levels and across all areas of the business. Encourage them to Reply as well as only starting new discussions – this signals that they are engaging with what’s happening, not just using Yammer as yet another ‘broadcast’ channel.
