Dead to Sin; Alive in Christ “Imagine for a moment that you got into a car accident. You were fine but your car was totaled. What if you went to the mechanic and said, “I know my car needs to be fixed, but please don’t replace any of the parts. I’m used to the old ones; I want to keep them the way they are.” It doesn’t make sense. It seems ridiculous to want the car fixed, but no new parts. Many people live their lives just like this. When we give our lives to Christ, we become new creations. We want the new heart, but no other part. We have new hearts, but now our legs need to take us different places, our eyes need to look at different things, and our minds need to be filled with different thoughts.
13
Dead to Sin *This happens at the moment of salvation......Before this we were condemned...But now sin no longer has that effect/power over us (now & forever) *By dying to sin......We identify with Christ (death and burial) = the old has gone...We are united with Christ *There needs to be a daily dying to sin and self
14
Alive in Christ *New Identity: - “Just as Christ was raised from the dead...we too may live a new life.” -Our sins no longer count against us, so we should live in them no longer - “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” -So just because we are saved, doesn’t mean we keep sinning
15
Alive in Christ *Instead, we have a New Perspective: - “We count ourselves dead to sin.” “The phrase “count yourselves” was often used metaphorically to refer to having absolute confidence in what one’s mind knows to be true - the kind of heartfelt confidence that affects actions and decisions.” *The point: We have absolute confidence (by faith) that our sin no longer counts against us and that its power has ceased to control us.
16
Alive in Christ *So now we have a New Desire: -We want to live life God’s way “But rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness.” -Romans 12:1-2 “Jesus isn’t looking for people who want to add Him to their lives as an insurance against hell...He’s not looking for those who want only to be outwardly changed. Jesus calls to Himself those who are willing to be inwardly changed by Him, who desire an entirely new nature that is created in His likeness. He calls those who are willing to give up slavery to their sin for slavery to His righteousness.” JMac
